the news today is the prophecies of yesterday

Years ago we used to go to a lot of Padre games. In fact, we saw 37 home games in 1988, and got to know the ushers, season seat holders, and met many ball players-hint, sit by the oppositions bull pen. But one consistent theme, no matter win or lose, or who was playing, was going to buy hot dogs, etc. And we often wouldn't wait until the vendor showed, or to the inning ended. Nothing going on, so I 'll just get a other hot dog. And while waiting in line with others of the same belief, hear the crack of the bat, the crowd roar, and you missed a home run, or a great catch. And as Scooter Rizzuto used to say, "Holy Cow!" And when your friends talked to you the next day, and talked about that event, you can say you were there, not mentioning you missed it-due to the desire for a tube steak. And unless it was Kosher-unholy cow!
You see we attend events, but sometimes miss the highlights. Several distractions get in our way-and little ones are just as guilty-in fact they hurt worse. Sadly, the ones who saw the home run on TV-live, can describe it much better than you who were there, in line, and with replay have seen it from every angle. You-did too, just not the right angle-or live. And God is putting events out there now, prophetic events, but we don't see them. And even with them making the news, some with distortion, the truth is missed-we only see what we want to see,. or what they want us to hear.
This past weekend, we got to witness, in Washington, DC, Biblical prophecy unfold. Two events, both aimed to honor man, took place. One was Martin Luther King's speech, and the other a rally based on returning to honor. Both not bad-at least as advertised, but with a dangerous underlying message. King's famous speech hit on equality-racial, with hints of spiritual. Glen Beck's rally hinted at honor, with hints of spiritual. But both were missing something-the truth. And it reminded me of the week Jesus rode into Jerusalem-all hailing Him, and the same crowd who one week later would say "crucify Him!" You see in both cases, the people are looking for salvation, and a savior-someone to lead them out of tyranny, and into freedom-but they are looking for a political leader to change laws, and not for a change of hearts-theirs. And when they don't deliver, another false savior will arise. We vote every four years don't we?
And we are warned that before the rapture occurs, these things will happen. Before Jesus calls His church out of this world, and the worst seven years of earth occur, He will rescue His believers out-no matter social, religious, economic, or club affiliation-you must be born again. And clever spokesman for man will use religion, and religious terms, and even talk of unity of man-and will mislead many. Some knowingly, some not. But the results are the same-without Christ-eternal damnation-hell! Beware when a Mormon, who in many ways share the same doctrines with Muslims, they are anti-Christian-just read their writings, and although appear nice, are caught up in an evil religion-one that denies the deity of Jesus Christ-even to use His name in vain for their religion. Don't hate them-love them! Just hate their lies! And when they talk of uniting all religions into one, we see the spirit of anti-Christ is alive and well. And beware-not all who come in the name of god bring good news. Anything other than the gospel, is lies. It sounds good, but from the Tower of Babel through the crucifixion, men have wanted what they want, but not what God offers. A false freedom, based on majority rule, not the rule of God. and although it sounds good, only brings more division-only in Christ will there be spiritual unity-and love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, self control, and long suffering-fruits of the spirit. Political rallies are a poor substitute for spiritual truth. Try flooding your churches, and see the difference. For you see while at the rally, you may have been the same as me missing the home run for a hot dog. Appeasing my physical appetite, and missing the reasons I really went to the game.
Feed your soul-or your senses. Can't do both. If you seek freedom in politics, you will be disappointed-laws will do that to you. But seeking God, and trusting His spirit to lead you, will always end in joy. If you are looking for another politician to lead you out of your situation-beware. Politician, news caster, whoever, unless their message is the gospel, there is no freedom. And you will be following your own desires, and not God's. His are simple-that in His patience no man should perish. The government will figure how many men lost in battle are acceptable. Or what is good for you. In case you didn't know-or even if you do.
Jesus Christ became expendable for you. Take a moment and listen to what He has to say. Act from truth, not emotions, and you won't be stuck in line when the truth happens. And unless the speaker has died on the cross, willingly-he cannot speak in love or truth. The words of Christ will last forever, but you won't. Political heroes come and go-be careful who you follow. Your wrong decision will never be straightened out in eternity. Seek God now, while He can be found.
Famines, pestilence, strange weather, war and rumors of war, children turning against parents, and people turning their backs on God. Then uniting under a false messiah. These are all prophesized by God, prior to His return. Are people starving worldwide? Ever hear of AIDS or STD's? Do Iraq, and Afghanistan mean anything to you? How about our borders? How many mothers murder their children, or kids kill their parents? Abortion by the millions! How many follow men, when they should follow God? And how many have turned against God, when He is the answer!
If you have read this-be warned! Seek God now! The time table is winding down, and no politics, laws, or great country will save you.
Note-the US is not mentioned in Biblical prophecy! Don't be here to find out why!

a letter to the editor

Remember used cars? A term, that stood for decades, but now in our politically correct environment are called pre-owned. Let me tell you, all cars are preowned. The factory owned them before the dealer bought them, and then even if you are the first titled owner, you are still the third owner. They are used-after you purchase the car and drive it. And yes-pre owned also. Your choice. But for the past decade or so the factories have come out with certification programs, programs to have the cars meet a certain criteria set up by the manufacturer. And in many cases, the cars are in better shape with a better warranty than when they were new. At least to the original retail owner.
Certified cars have been inspected, and all things brought to new specs. New factory parts, by factory trained technicians, and the best thing of all-a warranty that is better than the new car warranty. Usually up to 100,000 miles. Not bad. And someone else has taken the initial depreciation, so they are priced pretty good. But not all cars meet certification, or are worth investing money in to make them meet the standards. And these cars end up on independent used cars lots, and at a lower price. And when dealing with luxury cars, can be real expensive to repair. Many cars are bought at auction, and if a dealer passes on them, you know they are bad. And these are the cars the independents usually sell. I know, even though they are still in warranty sometimes, the wear items, or damaged items aren't. Truly a buyer beware market-based on price, the new owner, at least for a few weeks, got what he thought he bought.
I grimaced when I saw yet another CARFAX ad the other day. As if buying a car with a CARFAX report guarantees a great car. For you see, what they don't tell you is that CARFAX is only a reporting agency, not an investigative one. They only report what is public record, or gleaned from factory information, which is usually proprietary-not available to them. Ask yourself, if your car is in an accident, are you going to call CARFAX and tell them? Will you give up your private information to a third party, you don't know? So they are restricted, very restricted to what they can report. To me misleading, but to the ignorant consumer, a possible burden. It in no way guarantees the history or condition of the car. BUYER BEWARE!
Today we have many so-called Christian authors, and speakers who inject opinion, view points, and some times rumor and innuendo into their writing. My prayer is always "Lord, please keep my opinions and the gospel separate. Lead by your spirit, not my words." And I encourage you to check my statements with the Word. Not your opinion, but God. We both can be right, or both wrong. God never fails. It is His word that will last. And unlike a CARFAX, He knows all the information, not just what is reported to Him, and is willing to give to those who ask, willingly. Then it is up to you after you have prayed to take His advice. Godly advice only works when applied. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, don't count. You may not agree with His answer, but He will lead you through, not around your trial. Successfully, but you must follow His instructions, and let His plan play out.
Before you buy into more problems, check out God and His word first. Beware of any thing else, and anyone who forces opinions on you. God said test the spirits, always good advice. And Godly. Good intentions don't always bring Godly results, only in Jesus will you find that. Never say "Mike says," quote God. Long after our words are gone, His will remain.
Used lives are like used cars, a lot of hidden flaws. Go to the one who designed and built you, and never end up saying "I wish I had asked God first." So ask Him first today, good advice, and even found in scripture. Matthew 6:33. Look it up. Don't trust me, trust God. And his word, the only true facts out there.

heroes, loyalty, unity, and Jesus

Unity. It is a hot topic today. I worked for United Auto Group, and could fly anywhere in the United States on United Airlines. They could take money from my paycheck for the United Way. When our troops come home they are re-united, and I think you get the idea. Toyota actually produced cars in the US of A, built by NUMMI, National United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. Somehow, the title of something with united in it makes us feel, so united! And when we have society telling us to have "Unity through diversity," well I give up. Try that with Raider and Charger fans! But at any given time we can give in to unity, when it meets our needs.
Years ago the Albuquerque Dukes had 25 cent beer night. And there was unity in beer drinkers that night, as all the Bud, Miller, and PBR drinkers were unified in 25 cent, brand didn't matter, the price did! So much for brand loyalty! Whenever the Chargers are winning, they draw sell out crowds, but in times of 1-15, the city had to pay for the empty seats so that the home games could be televised. So the so-called loyal fans could unite at their homes, in front of their TV's, instead of paying $40 per seat. So much for team loyalty! And I watch at motorcycle rallies, as bikers unite, with the bar and shield crowd over here, the Wing Nuts gathered together, and the Beemerphiles still yet segregated. But we are all bikers, I guess that gives us unity, right? Or is that unity through diversity?
It seems society loves to talk unity, but can be easily swayed. My friend Peter has actually sponsored a Unity Ride, where all Christian clubs come together in various locations for the day, uniting in the spirit of the Lord, in a praise and worship day, after a ride and of course food. Church on motorcycles, not a bad thing.
But when God talks unity, He is talking of a special unity. Not a unity of togetherness by brand, price, choice of ride, or team loyalty. His is a unity of the Spirit, where we Christians become like Him, agreeing with Him, being part of a unity where no bonds can be broken, and are unique in the world. Where just because a group has things in common, and unites, in Christ it is a unity where we agree with Him,our commonality, Jesus, and our guide the Holy Spirit. A unity that doesn't change based on situations, as it is based on Jesus Christ, who doesn't change, but changes us when we let Him. A unity based on love and trust, administered in faith. Walking in His Spirit. No better place to be.
But weaker souls can be like society, changing with trends, conditions, finances, and doctrines. This is not unity in the spirit, and should not be called as such. True unity comes through Jesus Christ, and no other. You may differ on where to eat, what to wear, or what to ride-but true believers never differ on Jesus, and who He is. And will seek Him, and not the situation, when troubles come. Look to the cross-show it with great joy in your life. Seek God's spirit, and walk peacefully in it. Confident that the same God who told Moses "see you on the other side," was faithful to meet him there. It took unity with God for Moses to trust the way that God would provide.
Today your car may be broken, or your legs, or you marriage. God can heal all these things, if you let Him. Trust Him, ask Him, and then let Him. His way, not your prethought out schemes based on a night of losing sleep over it. That is not trust. Ask and it will be given to you. Seek and you will find. Seek first the kingdom of God, then all things will be added. Trust God.
Unity in the spirit. More than matching team jerseys. More than all riding the same brand. And more than just attending the same church. Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty! God made the first move when He sent Jesus. The next move is up to you.
And with 9-11 coming up, remember the Flight 93 heroes, 40 people who united in the spirit of the Lord, and saved our country. Heroes who took the scripture, "greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for his brothers," to heart, and in a brilliant, loving unity gave their lives. No one else but the Holy spirit could unite 40 strangers in a common bond-one that meant giving the ultimate sacrifice-their lives. So as we remember them, God bless America! And may we bless God! In the unity of love!

postcards from the edge

The first long ride I ever took was a 150 mile round trip ride to my grandparents' house in Pennsylvania. Taking the same roads that I had travelled with my parents on countless times, somehow they took on a whole new meaning for an 18 year old on his 350 Honda. Seeing things I couldn't from the back seat, I had all the senses going, including the sense of adventure. And surprisingly after 40 years of riding it, it still heightens my senses while riding it today. Maybe because it was my first, or maybe the destination, but I always enjoy that ride when back east.
Having just completed an 11,000 mile trip around the US of A, rides take on a different meaning. To many, trips are measured in mileage to make them successful. A trip to Orange County, long for some, seems boring-160 miles round trip. All the way to LA, wake me when we get there. It seems that after experiencing all I have, the local rides have lost some of their appeal. Almost not worth putting a helmet and gloves on for. It always happens after a long trip, but I am adapting better this year, as God is working on my heart.
When Jesus gave the great commission to His disciples-"go into all the earth, sharing the gospel as you go, and doing it in Jerusalem, Samaria, Judea, and the outer lands" please excuse freedom of not quoting the text exactly, many have gone all around the world as missionaries. While some have gone as far as Grape Day Park. Each a ministry field of its own, one no more important than the other. The important thing being going where God directs you. Maybe a statement about your heart condition than your physical location. But once again, I see too much influence on the outer lands perspective-location wise. China, Russia, Africa are all fertile fields, if only someone would go. The equation being the farther you go from home, the more God blesses. While neglecting the poor and wretched that are in our own home towns. And we are all guilty of it.
It is a mind set that can seem more adventurous the farther from home we go. Like we have to trust God more in a foreign land, than at home. God has blessed Theresa and I as we get to minister on the road. Wherever that road leads. Our Jerusalem may be Escondido today, but has expanded to So Cal. We can go to our Judea with Father Al in Shanksville some 3000 miles away. Or anything in between. And each ride is just as special, no matter the length, when guided by God. The excitement of seeing His will in our lives can happen on a five minute ride, or a five hour ride. It is in our hearts that the true outer lands are. And that outer land may be as close as your spouse, who rides with you. If you've never gone there with her before.
God has given us a heart for riding and being on the road. And while our freeways may seem boring, stopping for that one along the road, can open up a ministry field you may have overlooked. Or you may ride 1000 miles to a destination, neglecting to enjoy the blessings God has prepared for you along the way. But the seminar was great. Maybe if we see the destination of where we are now, and enjoy each mile for its own, we would be blessed more. Don't rush across South Dakota, take an old highway and enjoy the farms. Take an old state highway across Wisconsin, and meet the ones God put there for you to meet. Get off the 5 while in Orange County and take Santiago Canyon Road instead. Each one becoming a ride, instead of a trip. To be enjoyed. Wherever you are is local.
Your true location is more of a condition of the heart than a location of the body. Some only trust God with small things, and never venture beyond Jerusalem. Some go as far as Samaria, and live to get back. But then huddle in the security of home. Some may even go as far as Judea, stretching the limits they put on God. But it is the ones who seek the outer lands-all the blessings God has for them, that experience more of His glory. God is not so much a God of outer lands positionally, as He is conditionally. In your heart. So take a brave step today, take a trip with God. Venture into the outer lands of your heart. You may find that the message is the same, and be rejuvenated, knowing that God lives outside your locality. It takes faith to please God, and faith to venture out. Be blessed and take a road to somewhere you've never been. Samaria has much to offer, so does Judea. But only if you have the heart of Jesus.
Who was always on the road. And wherever He was, He called home for the night. Knowing His ultimate home was heaven. Can we remember that on our trip?
"I may spend my life upon the road,
just trying to add to what I know,
and some day I may settle down,
and all my friends will be around."
Just an old verse from an old Eagles song, Twenty One. But what a way to live. Realize you are on the road of life, and in heaven all your friends will be around. Settle for nothing less than what God has to offer. He is everywhere-make sure He is in your heart!

just a chance meeting on a sidestreet in TJ

My last selling job was with Bowman Distribution, the same one that now goes as Barnes Group, the blue and white sticker on the fender of NASCAR racers. They are a major contingency sponsor, paying big bucks to have their sticker on that fender. And at the time being far removed from any tracks, PIR was the closest, I put together a contingency plan for SCORE and FUD, the two biggest race series in off road desert racing. Difficult at first, have you ever tried describing a desert to someone in Cleveland, their home office? And how do you race with no track? But they overcame it, I think my enthusiasm had something to do with it, but probably the thought of more business was the persuading argument.
I dealt with all the classes, but my favorite was the Trophy Trucks. Factory backed, and using NASCAR motors, these trucks could go over 140mph, in the dirt, and had suspension travel of over 38"! An E ticket ride in any competition. And you may recognize the names I dealt with. Paul and Dave Simon, Robbie Gordon, Ricky Johnson of MX fame, Jimmie Johnson-he used to call me sir, Jimmy Smith-whose dad helped start NASCAR, Larry Ragland, Rob Mac Cachran, The Herbst brothers, and the Ironman himself, Ivan Stewart. All heroes to those who followed desert racing. With Ivan himself, more well known than all the others. Especially in Mexico, where he had won the Baja 500 and 1000 so many times he was legendary. E-von they called him in Spanish!
I did business with plants in Tijuana at the time, and got posters and stickers for my accounts there. These off road racers were legends there, and at the races fans would flock the booths during contingency just to get a sticker. Sometimes waiting all morning in line. So when the 1000 went out of Tijuana in 1995, I arranged for some to meet me at contingency, and meet the racers. They got to sit in the trucks, have pictures taken, and get behind the scene views that they could only dream about. Things that never would have happened without my connections. But one person was absent, the one they all came for-Ivan.
But walking down a side street next to contingency to avoid the crowds, Mario and his family walked with me. Carrying posters, stickers, and wearing huge smiles, this was better than Disneyland. Better than they could have ever dreamed, they were on sensory overload. Memories that they would cherish, and make their friends idolize them, for they had a first hand experience with the drivers, teams, and the trucks. They got to be backstage, on the other side of the barriers, and were welcomed. And then as so often happens in story books, Ivan comes walking up the street. Trying to avoid the crowds that mobbed him, he had walked up a side street, and called to me when he saw me, happy to see a familiar face. We visited for a few seconds, and then introduced him to my friends. He took pictures with each one of them, signed posters, and the shirts they were wearing, talked with them, and they left in total shock. The look on their faces showed somewhere between total disbelief and awe. Wait until there friends saw they actually met him, and they would tell their friends they know him! Just look at the pictures. But the words that Mario said that day, stuck with me. "Mike, you told me you knew him, but I didn't realize he was your friend." Being his friend made all the difference, as Mario was also my friend.
Jesus calls us friends. Where we were once strangers, when we give our heart to Him, we become friends. And He is able to tell us things, show us things, and we enjoy a special relationship with Him, because we are now family. And the things He tells us we now understand, because we are His friends. And although we have Peter times, where we ignore Him or don't listen, why is it always women who lead men astray, He forgives us, and wants to be our friend, even when we aren't His, and long before He became ours.
Is Jesus your friend? Wouldn't you like to have Him call to you when you see each other? The choice is yours. Stranger or friend. You can't be both. And there will be no strangers in heaven, just strange people who got to know Jesus-a group of friends of His in heaven. But you can hang with Him now, and be blessed.
Ask Him to forgive you, trust Him, get to know Him, and watch as your life changes for the better-and is blessed. Mario and his family that day met their hero, and I know the stories and pictures live in their hearts today of a chance meeting with Ivan Stewart. It is no chance you are reading this-turn it over to Jesus, be born again.
Posters and stickers are optional, and He has even signed you into the book of life. Now that is one autograph I'm glad to have-and will never see on E-bay!
He calls us friends. Get over the religion, and get on with life! His contingency plan pays for all who enter, and is good for all eternity. NO FEAR! Or as my Mexican friends say SIN NIEDO!
Be His friend today!

full line-single source

As I look around I used to think it was me, but I'm pretty sure it's not anymore. As motorcycle shops have turned into super centers, or motorsports dealers, I feel left out. Just 20 years ago when I moved to Escondido, we had a Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, and Yamaha dealer. Except they were four dealerships, owned by four different people, and competed against each other. And when you went in looking for Honda, you talked Honda. Suzuki guys talked Suzuki, etc. Parts guys carried more stock, only one brand to account for, and it was simpler-much simpler. If you wanted a big bike, you bought a 750 or 900. Touring, buy a Windjammer and add bags. Racing, strip off turn signals and lights. And when you went into the dealer, they sold only motorcycles, for they were in fact a motorcycle dealer.
Today we have mega dealers, who are failing at a mega rate. Motorsports have replaced motorcycles, and you can walk into any full line store nationwide and buy a motorcycle, personal watercraft-remember when only Kawasaki sold Jet Skis?, off road vehicles, boats, and four wheelers. And somewhere in there you find the motorcycles. Just ask the greeter at the door. How trendy!
From coast to coast motorsports dealers have replaced the old single line motorcycle shops. The only exceptions are some European brands, such as Triumph, MV Augusta, Ducati, and MotoGuzzi-which are still doubled up due to low sales volume. But motorsports it is, and motorsports it shall be. Except someone has forgotten to tell Lyall Sharer that. Lyall, a legendary racer in his own right, is the owner of Sharer Cycle Center and Stables, just outside of Madison, Wisconsin. Shop on the left, service in the back, stables on the right, and a huge barn in the middle, with a Union Jack and Triumph logo painted on it! No motorsports here, one horse or 150 horse-he has you covered. John in sales, Nate in parts, and Louis in service, with help from customers just hanging out and it all works. Can't tell you about the single horsepower vehicles-we just don't get along. But the two wheeled vehicles do very well. Triumphs are it, although he will sell a Guzzi or Aprilia if you insist.
They know their product, and know it well. And unlike so many others who have to be big to meet a payroll, have learned that success is found at all levels, and that they are more successful than most. Staying within their parameters, and not becoming motorsports oriented. And perhaps a lesson for those struggling today, and seeking to grow in God.
Are you able to get what you need at your church? Or is too much focus put on denominational issues, and not enough on God. What does the council say? Headquarters called, the superintendent is coming. How is attendance? How is giving? Are you meeting your building fund numbers? How do you like your new BMW?
Where is Jesus? Is He the head of your church, like He says, or do you center on social issues? Is your ministry catchy sayings on a sign, or are you serving the Lord? What is more important, building funds or saving souls? If I came into your church, would I know you as Christians or as Baprescathluthists? Where is Jesus? Are you trying to be a multi-line church, catering to all, when in Jesus you already have all, and can cater to individuals?
Are you getting fed? And what is it? If it is not Jesus, maybe it is time to change brands. And experience Jesus in a whole new way as you get to know Him personally. I am not denomination challenged, but I am against anything that divides the body of Christ. I have friends in many denominations, and send people who are looking their way, to those churches who put Jesus first. We all have Jesus, the same one, don't we? We call ourselves Christians, can we act like one? Talk to your pastor, ask questions, ask God to challenge you, and get to know Jesus better. Mega church, or mega dealer, it is still the one-on-one service that brings you back. Only in Jesus will you encounter that personal intimacy you desire.
After the parts man stops laughing at you when asking if a Honda part will fit on your Yamaha, go to the right source. Denominational parts don't always intermix, either. Stick with Jesus. His parts fit, His service department is open Sundays, and He is always available to talk. A specialist just waiting to help you with your problems, a loving God who wants to spend more time with you.
All dealers aren't multiline, or have horses. Find the one that is right for you and get involved. Do the same at church. Look to minister, and grow with a group who loves the lord like you do. At, after, and between church-any time and all the time. And get ready, for the ride of your life.

keepin' the shiny side up

A common practice among many bikers is to polish their aluminum instead of having it chromed. Cheaper, you get a great shine, but it takes maintenance to keep it looking shiny. For aluminum, like many other metals, will lose its gloss if left without maintenance-aka polishing. Now on a bike, it can be time consuming, only because of the small areas and access to them. It looks great when done, but more time polishing means less time riding.
I am attracted to shiny tanker trucks. That is why when we come upon one while riding, I like to tip my helmet to him. It must take hours, or at least hundreds of dollars to make it shine, only to know that in a matter of weeks it will need it all over again. But for the short time I see it, I am thankful. For I get to see my reflection of what we look like while riding. A moving mirror. And when coming up from the rear, get a full frontal view, and then while passing, get a side shot. And with some ultra shiny tankers, we get a pretty clear picture of what we look like to the rest of those on the road. And I must admit we look pretty good, as to me the most beautiful bike is one that is loaded for a trip. And these momentary glimpses of ourselves reflect to us how we look, and how we feel. Big smile here.
But most tankers are dull, with only a fine oxidation between the aluminum and the viewer, but enough to ruin the shine. And negate your reflection. Maybe lack of maintenance, or the driver just doesn't care, but the tank is dull, and we can't see ourselves.
Sin is like that. It makes us dull, and also hides the shining glory of God from us. Underneath we are the same person, but that fine layer of sin keeps the glory of God from shining from us-the shine is there, just a little sin can hide it. But it takes regular maintenance, think of it as a spiritual workout, to keep us glowing. You see, God never fails to shine, it is us and our sin that dulls the shine. Staying in the word, effective prayer, church, and Bible studies keep us glowing. And just like the athlete who takes the summer off, you get out of shape and it is hard to keep up with those who stay in shape-physical and spiritual.
This dulling doesn't happen overnight, it is gradual, and too late when you are without shine. The promises of "I'll deal with it tomorrow," only make the film harder to remove. But God, once we repent, removes the film, and we can see Him clearly again. Only to begin the dulling process immediately. That is why the Bible tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Not to be saved, it is a gift, but to maximize our walk with God.
Theresa has some great pictures of us riding next to shiny tankers this last trip. I hope we are the same no matter the tanker condition. What people see of God in us is important, don't hide your shine under a film that needs to be removed, or a tank that needs polishing. Keep the shiny side up, and the rubber side down, and live as one with Jesus, and watch as the shine draws others.
Through a glass dimly, is how the Bible says we see God when in sin. Don't let anything ruin your shine, or hide God's shine from you. You may be the only glimpse of Jesus some people see, this little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. I hope you do too!

we should have seen it coming

Buddy Miles sings "my mind is going through these changes..." The Chambers Brothers sing "that change has had to come..." Bowie sang "time may change me, but I can't change time..." And Santana told us "you've got to change your evil ways, baby..." And as we have been shown quite enough of for the past two years, change can a difference. Ahem...
I worked for a national company once, who was super successful, and people stayed for 40-50 years. The company was even referred to affectionately as Ma, and took care of its own. A family of 3000, that was successful to a man, or woman. Then they were sold a bill of goods, by a management team, telling how business in the 90's would be different. Technology, new management principals, and a new way to do business, and they would lead the way. And within 90 days of the new plan, the company was in turmoil. Communication lines were severed, the management was out of touch-inaccessible, and running for their careers, and we went through CEO's at a rapid rate. Good employees, who bought into the new corporate mantra, were ostracized, when the imminent disaster became imminent. Men who had been successful, suddenly were stumbling around, not sure of how to do business. The product hadn't changed, but the way of doing business had. And it cost sales, destroyed careers, confused the customer base, and took an industry leading company to its knees. Our competitors loved it, they swooped in and took away accounts, long time customers, who were used to a person, not a procedure. The only winners-the lousy management group that sold them this bill of goods. And then the excuses flowed, and we were told that it was just your perspective. The emperor really did have new clothes. And if you didn't like it, leave. So over 1500 men did. And took their business contacts with them. Leaving those remaining but a shambles. Shaken, and stirred.
At about the same time, the church I was attending was growing. In particular the men's fellowship. And the growth in the men spiritually was noticeable, and it flowed into their business lives and their families. But with success, came a new man into the group. Who knew people, celebrities. And told us that there was a better way, and got some excited. There were Christian Padres, and would come and speak. For a price. And so the plan was implemented. Where we would have 50-75 men to a meeting, the numbers dropped. The free meal, now was $7, and some didn't have it. You see we were hungry for Jesus, not some pitcher signing autographs. Charging for something that was free was an offense, and like a bad movie, many got up and left. And didn't return. The reply, "well if you want better speakers you must pay for them." I don't remember Jesus charging for any speaking engagements. The focus went from Jesus, to the celebrities, and them instead of the Bible. And men quit coming, and were upset, but no one listened to their cries. This fellowship that had been productive, and kept men in the word, suddenly was ruined by one bad decision, and a pastor that rather have his ears tickled, then his flock fed. You didn't like the new way, complainers, they were labeled. And finally this man had such an impact on the pastor, that his messages changed. And when he was caught lying from the pulpit, it was time for us to leave. Right before he was shown the door. And that church has never recovered in almost 20 years! Such a deal for only $7.
The world is invading the church. Programs, procedures, rules, and regulations. Movies and technology dominate the latest generation, and without an entertainment value, they think who will come. Funny, the message stays the same, why do they change? And we end up confused, and looking for somewhere else where we can be fed. And the world? We not only let it in, we invited it in, and then shut the doors behind it. It can't leave. And the enemy sleeps better that night, knowing that his job is going well. With a little help from his enemies...
Billy Graham has been successful for over 60 years, keeping the message the same, the gospel. Not charging, not selling programs, not introducing new procedures. Just speaking the timeless gospel in love. For free, just like Jesus. Why mess with success?
Success has been defined as the completion of a preset goal. Beware of this. Success in God's eyes is obedience. Numbers are not important, Christianity should not be a numbers based, performance based relationship. When it is reduced to that, you've already lost. Ask yourself, has that truth set you free? Jesus does.
Be as gentle as a lamb, but as wily as a serpent, the Bible advises. And it is good advice, but only if taken. All things are not profitable, and in the end the Word will endure. Don't be left standing without it. Man plans, and God laughs. Church leaders take note-your congregation is! Feed your flock, we are hungry!
Bob Dylan wrote "the times they are a changin'," aren't you glad the gospel hasn't? And at prices you can afford!

your life-a maze or amazing grace

Did you ever wonder about the signs that say SLOW CHILDREN? What makes them slow? Is there something the matter with them? And, do they grow up into slow adults?
One of my favorite Bible stories is about Dagon, a pagan god, and the people that worshipped him. And how when put to the test, was found every morning to have fallen from his perch. This carving, if you will, their god, had fallen down, and had to be picked up and set back on his pedestal. Now what kind of god is it that can fall and then have to be picked up by his worshippers. Is there something wrong with this picture?
A man gives his all for his job. Works late, goes in early. Misses kids games, family functions, and puts the job first. Spends vacations taking home work. Lives for the company. And then one day, he is laid off. His god, the thing he lived for, deserting him, when he needs it most. Not there to pick him up. An outsider. Is there something wrong with this picture?
The man's has two classic cars, nice, but over maintained. Every weekend they are waxed, and shines better than it ever did when new. Never has to lift the hood, except to wax the engine compartment, as the car is never driven. Maybe only driven twice a year, gotta keep the miles down. What if something happened while driving? A magazine hears about his cars, and invites him to bring them to a rally for a photo shoot. Except he is late, and misses the shoot. His car wouldn't start, and he had trouble finding the proper battery for it. The machine he worshipped and adored let him down, when it was needed. Under or over maintained? But it sure is shiny! Is something wrong here?
Finally, the Christian couple tells us how it is OK to drink. Socially, and they are very social. All their friends do it. Even the pastor says it fine, just a little won't hurt. Need to unwind from stress at work. The job you know. And so they drink a little, but how do you tell when a little is too much? And when they get word that their daughter is in trouble, and needs them, they can't go to her. They're impaired by the alcohol. That little has become too much, and has gotten between her and them, and she suffers. When she needed her parents most, they were impaired by another god. The drink they worshipped has become a prison. And others have suffered because of their selfishness. Is anything wrong with this picture?
In all the cases, where were the gods of these people when they needed them? What kind of God do you serve that needs to be carried by you? Who do you call out to after your job has ended? Or your car leaves you stuck? Or your daughter suffers because you couldn't get there when needed? We don't look at these things as gods, but anything you worship, or put first in your life, can control you, and will if you choose to let it. Or even not let it. Your life style will tell you much about what you worship. When it should be a who. God is a somebody-not a something.
A man encountered Jesus, and wanted to know about eternal life. He was young, rich, and had much. And had led a good life, keeping the commandments. He thought he was in for sure. But when told to sell all he had, and give it to the poor, he found he couldn't. And wouldn't. His riches were his glory, and kept him from heaven. His good works, and charitable deeds meant nothing, if he had other gods before the one true God.
What are you stumbling over today? Are car payments killing you, because you just had to have the ultimate driving machine, that sits in the garage weekends? Does your house own you, because you must have a 3000 square foot house for the two of you? Are you exhausted on weekends, and miss out seeing your family, because you just had to have that job, and find out the company owns you, take it or leave it, their answer when you ask for time off. Do you look to some federal program to sustain you, instead of the living God? Not too far fetched, and if you aren't in one of these scenarios, you may know someone who is.
Paul admonishes us to be happy in every situation, and when trouble comes, look to God. And not the situation. The victory won at the the cross, is still celebrated today. That still small voice is still speaking today, wanting to direct and bless you. But it is your choice. You can either go out every morning and pick up your god, or you can have God pick you up. A simple choice, but not simply made.
You shall have no other Gods before Him, is the first commandment. It means cars, jobs, the Padres, and yes, even your wife. Put Him first, and get a true perspective. Be truly in love with him, trust Him, and watch as He adds everything else to you. The right house, right car, right job, and right wife. Too bad you can't ask the rich man who refused Christ-you'd have to go to hell to find him, and no one returns from there.
Heaven awaits, eternity begins now. Will your God get you to heaven? On earth, as it is in heaven. And that's a promise, for those who have chosen Jesus. The only true God.
love with compassion.

raining like the Dickens

Little Joey B. of El Camino Del Rey Mar Vista writes, "Mike, when it rains and you are riding, do you get wet?" Yes , Joey, you do. And next time it rains, go outside and stand in it. Like, duh!
And as a charter member of the Like, Duh! Club, I can attest to that fact. For some reason, I hesitate to put on my rain suit, when all the signs are there. While the lovely Miss Theresa is snuggled up inside her rain suit, all dry and secure, I continue to ride, even though the skies are black, the wind is blowing, the weatherman warned us again this morning, and even the wetness in the air says stop, somehow I ride on. And outside of urban areas, noticeable by their absence are very few overpasses, so there are very few places to pull over. And when one is found, usually a truck stop, many like minded riders are found there, with their dry wives accompanying them. And as we struggle to get the dry plastic suit over our wet clothes, after the five minute wrestling match, they always ask, "do you have to go to the bathroom?" And even if you didn't, now you do. Thanks a lot, honey.
But as I waited until the last minute outside Madison, Wisconsin, riding north on US 151, I found my dressing room to be a car dealership that was closed, as it was Sunday. And parked in the service reception area, which was just long enough for my bike to stay dry. And as I struggled to put my rain suit on-it takes two when one is wet, the silence from her was worse than the usual "why did you wait" I usually get pelted with. Thankfully I didn't have to go.
So riding on, it poured for another half hour, then proceeded to dry out as we reached our lunch stop in Appleton, The Machine Shed. Stripping off our rain suits, in bright sunshine, I am sure the patrons leaving thought we were crazy, not a cloud in sight. Those crazy Californians!
Now the rain had hit hard, filling the area on the seat between me and the gas tank with water, so that despite the rain suit, my crotch got soaked. Not the first time, so I am now better prepared to handle this situation. Now The Machine Shed has these killer buffets, you have to see it to believe it. And we were strategically escorted to the farthest point in the restaurant from it. So I got to walk the entire length of the building, three times, remember I said the food was good, so all could see me. Now I have learned not to make eye contact, so that I don't get to see the patrons staring at my crotch, dark and wet like I went in my pants. Or see the kid pointing, and saying "Daddy look, that man..." Thus avoiding having to explain I was in the rain, and waited too long, and I think you get it. Like, duh, kid! "You see son, I told you motorcycles were dangerous!"
"I'll wait until I'm older, or until I have time to get saved." "Not now, I'm having too much fun, when I'm not doing so well I will." Or "I'm not a murderer or anything." Truth is, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. And we need Jesus, the savior God sent to us. And all the signs are there for His return. Like the Bible prophesied, some over 3000 years ago, there will be strange weather-take a look around the world. Wars, and rumors of wars. As of today, Israel has been warned that Iran will have an atomic bomb this weekend, that they plan to use on them. Iraq, Afghanistan? STD's are out of control, HIV so prevalent it isn't even news anymore, crime is out of control-although when they change the way it is reported it seems no to be, and yet very few look to Him. I paid my taxes, I expect the government to help. And yet we hear"Where is the promise of His coming? Like we were taught in Sunday School?" Fact-He is coming, and be glad He hasn't yet, as if you doubt, it is as saying no to Him, and you would be left behind. Not a pleasant situation, for after the rapture will be the worst seven years the world have ever experienced. Even the government can't save you, they will be a major part of the cause!
Today is the day of salvation. Rather than look for an overpass that's not there before it is too late, trust Jesus today. He will calm the storms in your life, guide you through the cloudy situations, and bring you through to the other side, intact. You don't have to go to hell, just as I don't have to get wet. It is my decision, and God tells us that obedience is better than sacrifice. And I rather ride in the rain, dry, than wet inside and out. But yet, we wait. Jesus Christ, the decision is yours. I hope you don't delay, before it is too late!
You see the scriptures are always correct. And like the one painted in the children's nursery are accurate, for all to see. "We will not all sleep," it says, "but we will all be changed." Proof enough for me. Let Jesus change your life today.
Amanda Hondasakitridavidon writes, "why don't bikers smile when riding?" You see Amanda, there are these creatures called bugs, and they get in your teeth...."

the character to stand up and be counted

Aretha Franklin sung about. The Boy Scouts, and the Girl Scouts include it in their oath. It is in the marriage vows. In the biker community, we abide by it. And our military heroes require it. It is called respect, and this weekend, the lack of it was shown by our president. This is not a political message, nor will I entertain one, this is about honoring heroes, who gave their lives, either voluntarily or involuntarily on 9-11. It is about compassion, love, courtesy, meekness, and honor. And it is about time we as human beings start to show it. It is about character, and doing the right thing. No matter what anyone else says!
How many remember 9-11? Has the impact been forgotten? Or have you forgotten the scenes of hijacked planes flying into the WTC? Remember, we were attacked! Unprovoked! Do you remember those jumping out of windows? Do you remember those brave first responders, rushing to a certain death to rescue those trapped? If you have forgotten, shame on you. And shame on us, for not keeping this in the forefront. It is not about being anti-Muslim, but pro-American. And as Americans, we need to stand up and be counted, not polled.
Through Torches Across America, and Father Al at the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville, I have met some of the families' survivors. I have wiped tears from my cheeks, belonging to Ilse Homer, mother of Leroy Homer, copilot of Flight 93. I have cried, and also laughed with his sisters and brother in law. Not about politics, but about our common devotion to our country, and how Leroy gave up his life. When I visit Mary White, Beth Wainio's mom, she inspires me to remember 9-11, but also to carry on despite it. Sett your sights on things on high. I have visited and counseled with Michelle Little, sister of David Weiss of Rescue One, who died in the WTC, seeking to rescue others. We are stronger as a United States of America than a divided one. Remember that. Such a great nation as the US if A will not bow to any enemy, particularly one worshipping an evil, pagan God. And that is why it is so disgusting that our president, will not defend the country he is sworn to protect. And will not do the right thing. Not a political stand, but an ideological, and religious stand, based on being a Muslim, whose God has no love in him, and whose idea of peace is when all Christians are dead and gone. Look it up. Who enter our ranks, not to become Americans, but only to spread a perverted gospel of lies and deception. To weaken our country, doing things they are not allowed to do in their own. What other country is the world offers such freedom? Remember that, as those who fight and die for your freedom, are doing it for them also.
In the Psalms, David cries out to God, to let the words of his mouth, and that the meditation of his heart be pleasing to God. Words, spoken to be heard, and his meditations, his thoughts, ideas, and his secrets, may they please God, and not any political party or newscaster. He knew where his peace came from, and understood respect.
But do we? When we think no one sees, how do we act? Or think? And when we get caught, how often do we talk about our rights? Funny, how only guilty people need rights. Innocent ones don't need to call on them, very often. Look to Jesus, as the ultimate example. Who although He was God, stepped down out of it, and became a mortal man, dying on the cross. Gave up all His rights, so that you could be reunited with God, and go to heaven. Try that one on, Allah! And did it all for you, while still a sinner, and with those He loved showing Him no respect. Telling us to pray for our enemies, and those who persecute you.
Do you pray for your enemies? Allah says don't. Not one of his 99 attributes is love. So how do you expect his followers to show you love, unless you show it to them first? They are not our enemies, only their perverted beliefs. They need Jesus! And you can do something their God cannot-love and respect them, and tell them the truth! Is it possible we have let this false God, Allah, infiltrate our society, so we have more in common with him than you do with the living God? Or do you walk in the spirit?
And you can have all of God's promises become real to you. Turn to Jesus. Show His love to others. Show respect, you don't have to agree with them, to love or respect them. Show them a side of God they don't often see, instead of turning into the very thing they accuse us of. God says it pours hot coals on their head, and that love covers a multitude of sin.
Do you know of any persons, religion, or country that can't use more love? Show them Jesus. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, don't what it means to me? Find out what it can mean to you, showing it for others. Doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do. America, unite as Americans, not as political parties. And Christians, unite in the spirit, not as denominations, but as ones who believe in Jesus.
Abe Lincoln reminded us that a house divided cannot stand. Where do you stand? As for me and my house we are Christians, then Americans. And give all glory to God. Of thee I sing!
respectfully submitted,
with love and compassion,
Mike

when the truth is found

You'll have to forgive me if I appear confused every once in a while, because I am. And you'll have to forgive those who don't look confused, but are, also. Sometimes the lies, rumors, selfish viewpoints, and innuendos start to overwhelm me, and I need to step back and remember what is the truth. We have become a poll driven society, in which facts are based on opinions, and callously misstated as such, when they are really just opinions, and sometimes with no basis in fact. Carefully reported, or interpreted for the individuals own personal well being. And so many end up living a lie, and its consequences. It doesn't have to be this way.
Over the weekend a tragic accident took place at a desert race. The fact is a race driver, in his off road truck, lost control, and went into a crowd. Killing eight, sending 12 more to the hospital, and changing who knows how many families' lives forever. An accident. And as I listened to the media misreport about desert racing, I became angry. And somehow the anger at the stupidity of their reporting overshadowed my concern for these families. But only momentarily, thank God.
Those involved in racing know it is dangerous, and can be deadly. And to listen to those who are ignorant misreport the facts, angers me. But we should be used to it, even in some churches they have chosen the wrong way. Can't upset the congregation by telling them the truth, they might go elsewhere, and we have bills to pay! But those that speak lies don't realize the damage they do. In a society where various CSI shows are in the top 10, where they seek the truth, these irresponsible people speak first, and usually with total disregard for the truth. They have an agenda, and sadly hurt and maim more every day than were affected by this tragic accident. Even Agent Mulder would sort out lies from the truth, knowing it was out there somewhere. Not realizing it comes from within. But how many do seek the truth, but end up placated by inaccurate reporting? Feel good theology-note, it ain't all about you!
Already the talking heads, and other do gooders are calling for more laws. Outlaw racing, more cops, more fences. Have these people ever been to a desert race? Or a desert? They race here because of the freedom from the above. Laws don't save lives. Talk to John Lennon, the guy who killed him had broken over 70 existing laws at the time, would one more have saved his life? And if there were more, which now there are, why do so many continue to die horribly when they are ignored? And do you realize with each new law, another freedom is taken from you?
So why do those who are supposedly seeking the truth, end up missing it? Because it takes faith, not a whole bunch, but just a little, and it isn't about your faith, but who you place that faith in. And as I watch many wanting to know why this accident happened, you see only a few turning to the someone who can answer, and comfort. Faith is the hope of things not seen, and we can only believe with our finite minds, that which we see. But when we do, doubt even more, if the sight is unpleasant. Personally I am glad God doesn't let me understand everything, in fact no where does the Bible promise you understanding, but it does promise a peace that surpasses it. And that is my desire, and it can only come from Jesus. I wish they would report that. Finally a truth, the truth that would help someone, and set them free.
Tonight the news will report even more death in Afghanistan, unrest in various cities, and families ruined by drugs and alcohol. It doesn't have to be that way. Jesus offers a way out, but you must choose it. Don't fall into the lie of the devil made me do it, or the enemy is attacking. It is not his fault, but yours, as you choose whom to follow. The warnings were there. God never promises the way out will be easy, or the road smooth-but that He is the way out of your situation. Rather than seek to place blame, look to God and ask forgiveness, then seek to forgive others. Do not allow bitterness to be added to the list of problems you have-seek to substitute joy for that!
And allow Jesus to do miracles in your life. He wants to, and many times we prevent Him, just because of unbelief. The truth is out there, and more accurately can be in you, when you repent and turn to Him. The decision is yours. Personally, I choose Jesus. And let others know. How refreshing the truth is after a day of lies.
He came to fulfill the law, in love, by being love. Grace is what He calls it, and it is available to everyone right now, who only believes. And that is my prayer for all who seek, for they will find hope in Jesus Christ. Bobby Kennedy once said "some see things as they are and ask why, I see things as they should be and ask why not." Why not Jesus? Things as they should be. Let's pray...
love with compassion,

how y'all doing?

Although they are not new, they are becoming more prominent while travelling today's major highways. Welcome Centers, and when you cross into the next state, it is not unusual to encounter one within the first few miles. From rest stops with vending machines in cages, with access for none but the smallest hands, to huge buildings with free refreshments, they tell a lot about the personality of the state you just crossed over into. It seems the farther west, and farther north you go, they are more spartan, but the farther south and east, the more elaborate. And providing a welcome is exactly what they do.
Entering Maryland on US13, on the Delmarva peninsula, you are greeted by this huge house like building, staffed by volunteers, who can answer any questions about what is on the road ahead. And in recent years, with so many bikes on the road, many have become motorcycle friendly. Recommending the long way, with better roads, instead of the four laner around towns. Non-tourist advice to tourists, making your trip special. Offering refreshments, info on where to stay-some even offering to make reservations for you, discounted no less, like the one in Tennessee a few years back. Offering free brochures, maps-my favorite, for free, and helping you plan your trip through their state, and not necessarily the same route that the Chamber of Commerce would plan for you. And some stick out in my mind on this last ride.
Louisiana, where the man gave Theresa a piece of cotton, with seeds from a live display, for her preschool class. The bumper sticker in Mississippi, saying "I'm not your Mama, pick it up ! Simple, yet effective. The women in Alabama, suggesting places to eat in Dothan, where the locals eat. And of course the one on I-95 when entering Florida. Huge compared to any other, due to the fact it is on I-95, which is Main Street USA for those fleeing the Northeast and the Rust Belt, and wintering in Florida. An air conditioned oasis on a 95 degree day, that welcomes you with cold, Florida orange juice. Now personally, Florida makes the best OJ, its oranges are sweeter, and this was like OJ heaven, the drink not the convict. Standing there overdoing it, but no one commenting, the OJ flowed like rain for me, and I was totally refreshed. One of the women volunteers, even allowing me to use her personal computer to find the Triumph dealer in Daytona.
And outside seeing my first Florida State Trooper car, always like to ID them before they ID me, assisting where a semi had caught fire, melting the cab and engine to the ground. Fortunately, no one was hurt. And reflecting a central theme found in each and every rest stop, a pride for their state, and the desire to make you welcome as you visit their state. Welcome to their home, if you will.
Our church recognizes first time visitors, and I like to think of us as a welcome center. And I try to notice who is new, and try to greet them afterward. I want them to be welcome, be blessed, and feel comfortable. This is my church home, and I am proud of it, if that is the right word to say. We have met other bikers, people from places we visit, and have shown them places to eat, and sometimes take them home with us to visit. Showing hospitality to a stranger, and hopefully making their visit one they will remember with fondness.
Meeting Jesus is like that, He makes you feel welcome. From the men on the road who He walked with, and whose hearts burned when He was with them, to those He welcomed while feeding and teaching, anyone who had an encounter with Jesus, found He made an impact on them. Some lives He would change, and some only saw Him as Joe and Mary's kid. Some recognized Him as God, some were just hungry, thank you very much for the free meal. But all who encountered Him, will have to make a decision someday on who He is. And the church, His representatives, may be that means. The love you show to strangers, your kids, and your pastor, tells a lot about who Jesus is in your life.
Recently visiting Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa, we saw Pastor Chuck, and when he came to speak, the room broke into applause. An applause of love, one I wish our church would do for our pastors. A show of love, that was contagious, even before any words were spoken. A huge welcome center, welcoming their pastor. Who then goes on to lead, disciple, encourage, and inform his flock all about the things of Jesus-just like the volunteers at the welcome centers along the road.
All your words man nothing if you don't show love. Welcome someone today, show them Jesus is more than rules and regulations. And it is OK to do this outside of church, and on days other than Sunday. He is bigger than denominational barriers, and you are welcome in His house anytime. Spend time fellowshipping afterward, and take notice of visitors, or of those looking to belong. Invite them to join you, and you will find the scriptures come alive. For just like Jesus told us, once we were strangers, but now we are friends. A friend of Jesus, is how He sees us. I hope you do too.
For we are all just visitors here, just passing through. Enjoy the trip, and the OJ.
love with compassion,
Mike

one score and seven

I watched as his wife lovingly stroked his beard, all the time telling him how much she loved him. But he could not react, as strokes and other physical maladies had reduced him to this vegetative type state. A very personal, loving moment that I was privileged to see, and after a few seconds turned away, because it was so private and intimate. This couple, married for 27 years, had at the altar the day of their marriage taken vows. For better or worse, was not a choice. Nor was richer or poorer, and definitely not in sickness and health. They were conditions to honor, to show their love for each other. Commitments made, that in the good times they would celebrate, and in the times of tribulation fall back on. The true character of them as individuals, and as one before God shining through in their last days together. A situation that would want to break your heart, but given the character they displayed, made me smile. And whistle a happy tune back to my bike.
For it is the tough times where we grow in the Lord, and build our testimonies, and in the good times enjoy the benefits of enduring them. It is in the trials of life we grow our character, one that with God with them in the midst of their troubles was a comfort to them. "Well done, my good and faithful servant," await them when they get to heaven, spoken by none other than the creator of the universe Himself-God! But only after they cross over to heaven, and the final battle-death is won!
After 32 years of marriage, Theresa and I have been in many battles-fortunately not between us. We have found that in our weakness, God's love is our strength, and as we still watch Him take us through our daily trials, wonder how we would have ever made it without Jesus in our lives. It is written, the two become one, and we surely have. Thanks to God's mercies, new every morning, and we have yet to have leftovers, and walking in His grace, we are secure that He is in control-trusting Him when their is no evidence of Him, just knowing that when we cast our cares on Him who careth for you, He will love us through it. Carefree, not careless, as the lack of worry makes us appear.
And that is what I saw in that hospital room yesterday. And that is what I want for another young couple just entering into marriage. Both have pasts that without God are a burden, and a recipe for failure. But because God is the center of their relationship, I know they will endure. Romans 8 promises that, that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ. And the trials they face early will only build their marriage and character stronger as they row together. And be a great example to all detractors, hopefully showing them how Jesus Christ changes lives-and can change theirs.
Whether two weeks from now, or 30 years from now, keep God in your marriage. And watch as you grow in Him, you will both grow together. For what God has put together, let no man put asunder. Living well, for Christ, is still the best revenge. Celebrate your marriage each night with a kiss, and each morning with a hug. And pray. And keep God in your marriage-the most intimate act you will ever perform as husband and wife.
And watch as the glory of the Lord rises above you!

Mr. Heston your miracle is ready

A group of young mothers are are at an afternoon tea, when suddenly they hear a blood curdling cry. Each mother looks up, and one states, "that's my daughter, I know that cry!" Another corrects her, "no that's my little girl, I can tell it anywhere." And a third says "you're both wrong...." So running to the bedroom where the two year olds are playing, they rush in. Only to find the kids giggling-because one little boy has a cat by the tail, and it is screaming!
M-E-O-W-W! Only the cat's mother fails to respond. Of course.
Why is it that sounds appear normal when you are close to home, but the farther away from home, a dealer, the darker it gets, and the more secluded it gets do the noises exaggerate themselves? Or is it our hearing gets more perceptive? Or is it we are just finally paying attention? Even our dog can identify who is riding up the street to our house, and knows which door to greet them at, or even to meet them at the street. So why is it that we have trouble listening, identifying, and reacting to sounds?
For one this is a noisy world, you don't realize how noisy until you get away from a city, and notice the absence of noise-what a sweet sound silence can be. Or we get so familiar with a noise, that when it gets louder progressively, we don't pay attention. "I've had that engine noise for years, it's OK" Then the engine seizes. Years of warning shot to .....
On our last trip, I needed a chain, and sprockets. With no one along the way having sprockets in stock, I replaced the chain and all was OK until we hit Oklahoma on our return, and it got loud, louder, and then scary-BANG! Stopping at a dealer in Amarillo, he adjusted it, and advised me "this chain isn't much longer for this world." If I could only make it to Albuquerque, the Triumph dealer could replace it. Which I did, make it that is.
But the sprockets were shot-and the bike should have been parked. Sprocket teeth should be round, so the chain roller fits in it exactly. Mine were oval, and chain was slipping and jumping with the threat it may come off. So emergency surgery was in order-like the kind I used to see in the pits at Baja. Just get it home! Which Aaron the service manager did. We put an old roller chain on it, I kept the speed steady, and we did OK. In fact he insisted I call him when I got home, he was that concerned. But you see, I had prayed, and God had given me a simple assurance I would be OK. His words, the same as a song we all sing. "Twas grace that brought you here thus far, and grace will get you home." And it did, without worry, incident, or failure. Can't say the noises weren't there, but God is bigger than any problem! And when I called Aaron, he was amazed. He told me he thought I would never make it, and without grace I would not have.
In times of need, we need to remember God's promise to the Israelites. When Moses, wonderfully played by Charlton Heston, got them to the Red Sea, God was with them. He had promised to meet them on the other side, He just didn't tell them how they would get there. But the whole time He knew, and had the entire situation under control. And to the last man, they got across safe as He parted the sea. Something not even the best FX crew could duplicate. While the Egyptians looked at the problem, Moses looked to God. His grace that had brought them thus far, got them to their destination. He never promised a smooth route, if you have a lack of faith, believe Jesus' words, "in this life you will have tribulation." Now that's a faith builder, and if that is true, so are His other promises.
Can't see tomorrow for a lack of today? It's there, and so is God. He never left, you did. But a simple change of direction, can put you back on course. And His grace is always sufficient.
Trust Him today, and find that He will get you home. That's a promise. No matter how you've screwed up. His love covers a multitude of sins, and He wants to get you home.
Mercy and grace, two wonderful sides of God. Grace to give us what we don't deserve, and mercy to not give us what we deserve. Isn't it ironic that you can only get mercy when you screwed up? Now that's grace.
We are only as strong as our weakest link. Mustard seed chains. And that small faith that believes the promises of God, will get you home. See you on the other side.

hard hearts and soft butts

There are certain benchmarks that are more important to us than to others. To a biker, those who ride, that can be distance, speed, miles, or some other criteria. The Iron Butt Association has an award they give for riding 1000 miles in 24 hours. A feat, which I have done. In fact I have ridden 1125 miles in 24 hours, and over 1000 in 13 hours. Do the math. 100 miles per hour? How about 100 miles in one hour! Done it twice. Add to that going a real 155mph before rev limiter cut in, riding over 40,000 miles in one year, done it a few times, and my latest riding over 10,000 miles on our trip. Ridden in all 48 contiguous states, and Mexico and Canada, too. Needless to say, I can stay up with most when bench racing about distances ridden. But recently, some friends of mine, rode 1000 miles in 24 hours. At first I was not impressed, until I stopped to think. Not only did they do it on Scramblers, with knobbies, but a total of nine of them riding together did it-at the same time! Now in a world where when riding in a group you only go as fast as the slowest person, this is a feat! And on a bike with no fairing, knobbies, and old style open faced helmets-these guys are either nuts or should be waved off the track. But to me, they are my heroes.
And please, all you Gold Wing riders, windshield types, and cruisers, these guys rule in my book. An accomplishment I could never do, since the old group I used to ride with, did nothing but make excuses for my riding style. Too fast, too long, too many curves, and I think you get the picture. To them I say "too bad." You are missing out on so much. And I wonder how if a person makes excuses in one thing, where do they stop? Like compromising, once you start it's too late. Maybe that is why I ride alone, and when given the chance maybe Stu or Frank. I ride my talk.
Faith is like that. Do you walk your talk? Maybe that is why your faith is weak, when tested it fails because of excuses. Or why your words carry so little weight. You say you trust God, but the first time you encounter difficulties it's worry time, then the excuses flow. And to be honest with you, many are tired of it. And it wearies God. Why do we tend to look to man, who lies and will take advantage of you when given the chance, but turn our backs on God when He has never lied and is trustworthy? Add to that His love and grace, what's up with us?
To some it is like riding. It is the same everywhere, why leave the state. Or like so many ask me, doesn't your seat get sore? NO! I bought a comfortable seat! Are they that smart? And to many they doubt God. And looking to man, compromise what could have been. Why wait until the doctor can't do anymore to pray-pray now-best first aid available. You won't become an alcoholic if you never take a drink-so don't! You will never get VD if you don't have pre-marital sex. So don't! And if you truly give Jesus your life, you won't want to stray-for everything you need and desire is right there, along with so much more you could never imagine.
Have a decision to make? Ask God first. And He will give you insight. Trust Him, He just wants you to know Him better. If I had never been sick, I never would have seen Him as the great physician. In need, I see Him as the great Jehovah Jireh-the provider. Alone and lonely-He is the person who sticks closer than a friend. Scared-He is your protector. His record is clean-never lost.
Yes you might get bruised in the battle, but you will win the war. As God once showed me, referring to Paul and his tent stake in his side, allowed by God to have him seek God in all situation, if I lifted up my shirt, I would look like I fell into the sticker bushes. So many times He ahs tried to get my attention, but I either ignored Him or sought someone else. Stupid hurts, even have the shirt. Don't ask.
Consider God in your situation, and know that in your weakness, He is made perfect, in you. Trust Him first, and remember if on a 1000 mile trip, you ride them one at a time. So make sure your oil is topped off, your tank is full, and your seat comfortable-then hang on for the ride of your life. Safe in the commitment you made with Jesus will be honored by you. Now, all you need to do is keep up your end! Trust!
9 guys x 1000 miles in 24 hours = 9000 miles in 24 hours. What's your excuse? Trust God!
