joplin excursion

First thing Thursday morning, Andrew and I will be heading to Joplin to aid in disaster relief. We ask for your prayers for safe travel, and that we are able to minister in God's name. Also please take time to pray for Theresa, as she will be taking care of the house without me.
I am sure to have some great new stories of God's miracles when we return, we will be gone for two weeks. Thanks for your prayers and your support of our ministry.

no names mentioned to protect the guilty

"A labor of love," is how he described his position, and he fulfilled it with a great deal of success. Being retired from construction, he had the background to be the facilities maintenance man for the church, and he lived for it. It was a ministry that God appointed him too, and he loved it. It gave him a reason to get up every morning, and the grounds showed it. The campus showed the love of God everywhere. So whenever a problem came up, they sought him out, and it was remedied. And since his was a volunteer position, he ran the facilities as God showed him. Being blessed by not needing an income, he loved what he was doing, and it showed. But one day the church board decided to put him on staff. He would be an employee, with a small salary, and the love faded. Now he had a job. Instead of God's inspiration, he had a board's direction, and reported to men, who of course had their own ideas, and rules. Whereas he would arrive early and stay late, now he had hours. And soon the love was gone, and he retired. The board never knowing how they had robbed this man of his joy.
"You're doing it anyway," we were told, "so take the position." And we did, working within a national ministry. And soon found out like my friend, that working for God is better than an organization with rules. And when the pressure came to the point of their rules versus trusting God, we quit the position. And soon were forced out of the ministry. And a great burden was lifted, and today we minister more, and more effectively, with no rules or interference-with take guidance from God, instead of a board, or men with titles, and watch as they keep God in a box, and wonder why they have meetings, and we have divine appointments.
So earlier this year, when I was approached, being told, "you're doing it anyway," a flag went up, a big, red one. I could give up my freedom in the spirit, and trusting God, to fall under some rules and regulations and minister within a set of laws and regulations, both of which hinder the spirit of God. Can't bring Jesus, might offend the Muslim. Or Jew. Or Christian. Or whatever. So what if what you do is in love-which perfectly describes God, by the way, we have programs and procedures to help you, but you will need to give up your freedom to serve man. And, after paying for this course, you even get a certificate to serve. Whee! I can just see Jesus passing out diplomas, to men and women who paid for their courses, skipping over those who couldn't afford to, and not getting the certificate. Unfit to serve without it, they would be told. And being graded on things like attendance-mandatory, following the rules, and reading a book. Not the Bible, remember that offensive thing? Which all may be good-but isn't the gospel free? Did Jesus charge for lessons? All so we could have more rules and laws-laws which the religious obeyed, the same religious that came to kill Him? And did? Maybe I read it wrong when He says He came to set us free from religion. Doesn't the law kill and the spirit give life?
So faced with another decision, I think I have already made it. I have been approved to counsel one on one at church. A good thing, and an honorable thing. But already the rules are showing up, "and you do it anyway," has been offered to me. A book to follow, not the Bible, but an aid to it, and a curriculum to follow, step by step. And I have asked God, what is more important, following the rules of this in church ministry, or following Him? I already know the answer, I hope you do too.
Years ago when God put it on my heart to go into ministry, I was given priceless advice from a man who walked with God. He told me simply, "do not fall under a church or an organization. For the vision that God has given you will only be tarnished, and turn into their vision with their rules and regulations, and you will lose the vision. Trust God!" And so I have, and maybe that is what people see, for I know that is what makes me successful. So why do they want to take me, and make me come under their rules? Don't they get it? Are their rules better than God's direction?
Ask God today where and what He wants you to do. If within church-do it. If outside of church-do it. But do it for God, not for a title or a position-and definitely not for the paycheck. Where God guides, he provides. And I have always found that He does it more abundantly than I could ask for or ever imagine.
"But we need rules, so we can function." No, you need the Holy Spirit! Keep your laws, I'll keep my morals. And walk in the freedom that God gives you-free from rules. And for a title, just call me friend. That's what Jesus calls me. If that's good enough for Him, it ought to be good enough for us!

the Arnold at the well

Personally I am way tired of hearing about Arnold and all the children he may have fathered out of wedlock. It is pathetic, to hear about his sexual indiscretions in public. What is even sadder to me, is our wayward press has vilified him, but is making this woman who he conceived with a hero, or a victim, just because he is Arnold, ex-governator. And perhaps what annoys me most is their pious attitude, and their blatant hypocrisy.
I am sure that any one of them would still be glad to be honored with an interview with him. That even though he has trouble keeping zipper zipped, anyone of the gossipers who seem to portray themselves as news people, which absolves them of any moral lapses, would probably jump at the proposition of spending an intimate afternoon with him, providing they didn't get caught. Man or woman, that is how far our society has fallen.
These are the same folks who don't believe in marriage, but will get so holy when it becomes a news worthy item that his is over. I hope Maria is the saint that the press make her out to be, but with all that Kennedy lineage in her, I would be surprised. Seems cousins Bobby and Jack were at least as proficient outside of marriage as Arnold, only surpassed by their legendary brother Ted. But somehow, in our white males can do no right mindset, only the men stray, and if a woman does, it is still the man's fault.
And I have trouble with that. I get embarrassed for these women who are scantily clad in public. Even worse the ones who come to church like that. And even more upset when men react to the bait. Girls-the type of bait you use will determine what you catch. Cheap bait will get you a cheap catch. But still it is the man's fault. No one seems to read and remember that afternoon in the garden, and how the woman fell into temptation, then lied to her husband about it. He was just as guilty, it was his decision to sin.
Sex outside of marriage, and the destruction it brings is nothing new. And it is the only sin that requires an accomplice. But the accusers have changed, but their accusation hasn't. 2000 years ago, a group of better than thou hypocrites were standing at the well, surrounding a woman caught in adultery. The Old Testament law required she be stoned to death-no prisons existed at the time. But fortunately, Jesus was there, and intervened. Definitely not pro-sin, He talked with her, and also the crowd of men. Question-if she was involved in adultery, didn't it take two? Where was her accomplice? That would have perhaps caused a riot, for the crowd may have known, and some in the crowd may have been willing accomplices. But Jesus, more concerned about repentance and restoration, got down and wrote something in the dirt. Words and figures that only can be guessed upon. But after His artwork was over, asked one question. A question we need to ask ourselves, next time we have rock in hand and ready to throw it. Jesus said simply, "he who is without sin, throw the first stone." And the crowd, facing the man of truth, dropped their rocks, and left. Only Jesus and the accused woman remained. And His loving words are ones we need to live by, "where have your accusers gone, I do not condemn you either, go and sin no more."
A personal message? Yes, but where were her accusers, who needed to hear the same message? Didn't Jesus extend the same mercy to them as He did to her?
Today you will screw up. Guaranteed. And you will need God's mercy. Sad, but the only way to get mercy is to screw up. But you also can have God's grace upon you. Jesus' words of 2000 years ago are still contemporary today, "go and sin no more." Forgiven.
Yes, Arnold, there is a penalty for sin. But also a God who sent His Son to ransom you. A news story I dare any of the gossip shows to share. Women on the View? Which of you was celibate before marriage? Or during? After? Only in love could Jesus tell us to go and sin no more.
Remember those who report these things, the same seed you have sewn may be the same seed that comes back to haunt you. Put down your stones, and pick up a Bible. Read the words. And repent. That would certainly be something newsworthy. If you want to be treated like a lady, act like one. And men, treat her like a lady, and she may become one.
Sin will always be sin, but we don't always have to be sinners. Arnold, seek forgiveness. It is ready and available to all who ask. Even politicians. Your time at the well is here. It is your decision. God will know, I only hope that your accusers hear the same message. You weren't the first one to say "I'll be back!!"

three part harmony

Question-what group has sold over 100 million albums in the past 45 years, the fifth largest selling group in history, has been accused of starting disco, although their largest selling album preceded the movie, is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and is almost invisible-even when they were at the height of their fame? Final clue-they have some of the most beautiful harmonies in the world. Tick...tick...tick...times up.
Answer-The Bee Gees! The three Gibb brothers, Barry, and the twins, Robin and Maurice. Superstars in the sixties, and then even larger when their album, Saturday Night Fever came out. An album where they had already cut the tracks, before the film was made, a dance album they called it, that many claim is responsible for the disco invasion, although they were no part of it. Music that today stands by itself as contemporary, as all good music does and will.
The Gibb family was comprised of four sons, the youngest one, Andy, becoming a superstar in his own right, but succumbing to drugs from the pressure of stardom. A loss of musical talent, as his first three single releases became #1 hits! Truly a family of musical talent if their ever was one, and without a doubt the most famous group from Australia-even if we don't remember them when famous musical groups are remembered.
I love harmonies. Listen to Poco, and the way the voices seem to mold themselves into one. The Beach Boys led by the genius of Brian Wilson, able to translate the songs he heard in his head onto vinyl. Perhaps the all time harmonies of all time. But when watching a Biography of the Bee Gees yesterday, Maurice, one of the twins, and dead almost 10 years now, told that it was really Barry and Robin whose voices provided a most unique harmony. He told that when shown on tape, how they could follow each brother singing individually. But when Barry and Robin sang together, something magical happened-their two voices became one. Whereas there had been two distinct voices, when in harmony they became as one-and that was how the recorder picked them up. Not a third voice from them combining, but one voice actually formed from the two! True harmony-as the two became one! I wonder how many of you top 40 am radio types ever could tell? And if you did, could appreciate it? This musical miracle happening right before our very ears, but never hearing it!
Harmony is something we desire in life. To be in tune with nature, with our motorcycles, and with our families. But true harmony comes from being in tune with God. When we let Him into our life, and let Him fill that "God gap" that we all have, then we become as one with Him. Not some mystical new age theory, but when we let His spirit guide our life, we are in Him! A mystery, God calls it, that only can be revealed by the Holy Spirit. Who points you to Jesus,, who is the only way to God-His Father! The Trinity-a pure and supernatural harmony, that all work together, in pure love, when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. And who lets the music of God sing a new song in our lives!
Just reading the Bible will not bring this harmony. Nor will going to church, praying, or doing things that you think will please God. You cannot make Him love you more than He does-that's called agape love! But yielding to the spirit, asking God to guide you, letting Jesus truly be Lord of your life, the harmonies begin. And as you begin to spend time with God, you hear life in a different tune, and see how this loving, supernatural harmony will guide and change your life. A trip into eternity, to spent with a loving God. But the first step starts with you.
Who do you say Jesus is? The spirit is pointing you to Him right now-you need Jesus, you need Jesus. But because He is a gentleman and comforter, does not force Jesus on you-it is a free will choice you make. And once you do, you have access to the creator of the universe, who calls you His son, and whose son calls you His friend. A perfect three part harmony, that somehow appears as three distinct persons, but is really one, and now you are a part of it! No wonder no one can explain it. A mystery, that only can be answered by making the first step-trusting Jesus.
Three part harmonies-beautiful to the ear. And a three part God in harmony with you-beautiful to the soul. Tune into Jesus today, and watch as His new song fills your soul. Listen as His voice harmonizes with you, and you sing songs that you never heard before, or old ones never sung like this before in harmony. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. A three part harmony-each distinct, but each with a beautiful voice of its own.
How deep is your love? You will never know until you sing in the harmony of the trinity. Makes that Saturday Night Fever worth Stayin' Alive until Sunday morning church! No more Jive Talkin' for me. When it comes to Jesus, If I Can't Have You, I don't want nobody! So...Put God in the first groove, and let Him wail!

the task ahead is never as great as the God behind you

It was 9-11 that brought the title "first responders" into our daily lexicon. Men and women, who when faced with a situation, responded first. And we learned how they face danger, and how in some cases it may even cost them their lives. And we learned with sadness mixed with gladness of how we love and respect them for it.
Although it is said that actions speak louder than words, it is reactions that speak the loudest. And just like a first responders reaction is based on actions learned, then taken to heart, our reactions are based on our heart, too, and what we have in it. And our reactions will tell the world more about Jesus than many of our actions.
I have never met a Christian who has not been called a hypocrite at least once. And sadly, the accusation is right. Maybe not in that particular situation, but somewhere along the line, we reacted not with the heart of Jesus, but out of our own selfishness. And to those who accuse me, I wish to apologize. Forgive me. And I pray you never fall victim to your own accusations in your life. Now that certainly would be hypocrisy, wouldn't it? But as Christians, God calls us to a higher standard. We are to love as Jesus loves us-without reservation or qualification. That may explain while many of our reactions take so long. But even worse is when we react in love, but harbor bitterness or hatred in our hearts. To our audience we may have reacted correctly and been spared the title of hypocrite, but God sees our heart, and we are just as guilty. Add lying into it, for we add that in when we mislead our audience about our altruistic actions, and we fall short of God's love. Fortunately He is gracious to show mercy and forgive. May we do the same?
I have been in two Saturday night services where a medical situation arose. Both being recorded for TV or radio. Both speakers, at the time, engrossed on what they were saying. In the first instance, first responders, aka paramedics came in and attended to the man during the service. Not one word, not one indication of any problem was mentioned from the pulpit. No call to prayer, no what can we do, in short-NO love shown. How would you have felt if the man was your dad, your son? What if it was you? Sadly this pulpit filler showed no love, and I felt sick-for both men. I almost stood up and rebuked him, but instead prayed for the sick man, only God can change a hard heart like that pastor's. But I carried bitterness about the pastor. Hypocrisy. I hope I have been forgiven, but am saddened that a man who preaches Jesus, who is love, failed when put in a situation where it needed to be shown. When confronted with an opportunity for a live demonstration of God's love-he blew it! Now that's hypocrisy.
The second event happened while a lady walked up the aisle and collapsed. Two people rushed to her aid, and took care of her. They appeared to be medically trained. At first the speaker didn't see it, but when he did, after a few seconds had passed, had us all stop and pray. The proper first aid, as God had sent two people to attend to her physically. Maybe, like in the first scenario, the rest of us were on trial, to show how we would react. Hopefully we reacted in love, putting this woman ahead of any taping schedule, and making her situation paramount to any other preplanned sermon. A live demonstration, of where our hearts were, in both situations. My question is, how would you have reacted?
Today God will place a Lazarus or two in your path for you to demonstrate God's love. How you react will tell your audience more about Jesus and who He is in your life than a lifetime of sermons. Keeping in mind, that Jesus told His disciples, whoever does this for the least of them, is doing it to me, what will be your first response? The Bible tells us that obedience is better than sacrifice. I can attest to that one. But our first reaction, which should be based on love, will show who Jesus is in our lives.
Someone is always watching. And we are all hypocrites. Please, if called one, don't feel led to give them a live demonstration. Mark Twain once said, "if you have a reputation for being a fool, don't open your mouth to prove it." Jesus tells us, "these things shall follow them that believe." Love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, long suffering, and self control. What is in your heart will proceed from your mouth. God already knows. Now, what gospel do you want to share to a lost and dying world? God leaves that up to you.
And your first response is.....Don't wait until a 911 call to show love. Let your actions speak louder than words, and your reactions be covered in love. Love is always the best action, and may keep you from having to react later. And as always, the proper answer is... Jesus!

and on the fifth day we rested

Years ago when I lived in Farmington, jokingly I suggested riding to San Diego on Memorial Day weekend for lunch. If we left after work on Friday, it would give us four days on the road, an easy schedule to ride the 1600 mile round trip. And so after discussing it, Brett, Bill, George, David, and myself decided to do it. And we had more fun. Even got to stick our feet in a cold Pacific Ocean, and George got his first sight of the Saguaro cactus-he "didn't realize that Arizona looked like this," having never been out of New Mexico. And the trip went pretty smooth, and this fun group of guys made it memorable.
At one point we switched bikes riding across the Arizona desert on I-8. I ended up on a Virago, which had four way flashers on it. Earlier George and Dave had mooned someone, and I figured this was a good time to get them. Falling back, far enough so that I lost sight of them, I turned on the flashers, and flipped the hi beam on and off, appearing to be a cop in pursuit to them. All four instinctively pulled over when they saw the flashing lights, and I went by waving. But George and Dave thought the moonee had called the cops and they were under going to be arrested, in Arizona where George had never been before. They laugh now, but they didn't then. I did both times.
All in all it was a fun trip, with only minor problems, that we overcame easily. And it was the first long trip for any of them except me. And our loose schedule had allowed us fun, without stress of where to be, or when. But that was to change. They decided to do it the next year, with Bill in the lead. He planned a similar trip, but had it down to 15 minute intervals, including sleep on rest area tables for 15 minutes. Four days broken down in 15 minute intervals, and they were surprised when I declined to ride with them. And at first, their feelings were hurt. They had with me accomplished a long weekend of 1700 miles, had a great ride, eaten well, but didn't quite understand the freedom of the road. I am not sure of details of their trip, but rest assured it didn't go according to schedule. At least once they got on the road!
It has been said into each life a little rain must fall. And being an outside person, I am not a big fan of rain. At night, fine but let all the roads be dry by morning. But this spring in So Cal, we have had more than an average spring rainfall, so I haven't had time to ride. And we have been forced to be inside, which means more reading, more trip planning, and more time in front of the TV. All things which in themselves are not bad, but when you rather be somewhere else, each carry their own penalties. Not a complaint so much, as a suggestion to God-send sun! Please! But God knows how much we need rain, how pretty it makes everything after it, and how we need to trust Him, even when it rains. For our lives are not Bill's planned trip. He left no room for flexibility, therefore never being able to be guided by God. They missed taking detours, or different roads, because they were on a schedule. They made four days of freedom into four days of exhaustion, by trying to keep to a rigid schedule, that no one imposed on themselves, except for themselves. A choice to be under bondage, rather than freedom.
Now I can't do much about the rain, but I can about my plans. And I have found that flexibility is a key to a successful trip, and can be to a successful life. When things don't go our way, like rain, we should seek God for His plans, His will to be done, just like Jesus said. And find out that He has blessings for us we didn't know about. Safer roads, with better places to eat. And new roads, which at times can feel like they were made just for us.
Being bitter about God's decisions reflects more on us than Him. He knows all-He's God. His love is perfect, and without bounds, conditions, or weather encouragement. When He allows time for rest, we need to rest. When we need to go faster, He will make the way. Slower, I think we all have been stuck in traffic, but only God can see how He may have saved us from what was ahead.
Apply your life's plans to your next vacation. Vacate the things of the world, the schedules, the trials, and ask God for what you should do today. And better yet, make every day a vacation, by starting it with Jesus. Yes, it may rain, but He is with you. Sunny days, he is with you too. But only, if you ask Him along. For His presence in your life is like godly advice, it only works if taken. Take some Godly advice today, seek God. Listen to Him, even if it makes no sense. And follow it. Enjoy the ride of life God has given you. Take in the sights, eat good food, and rest in body, soul, and spirit. Take the time you have to take the time.
Sleep soundly every night. It sure beats 15 minutes on a picnic table! And enjoy the ride of your life!

the benefits of never growing up

Although it was only 30 years ago, I have trouble thinking of the seventies as the good old days. Yes, I guess they were good, at least ok, but old, that would make me old, and although it's raining and my joints hurt, I don't think of myself as old. For me there are certain lines of demarcation. Old can be before I got my license, and was unable to ride places. Old can be before I got out of high school, and discovered the freedom of not having to go to school, but still having trouble with the responsibility of going, because you should. Old can be remembering things of my childhood, but not remembering what I had for dinner last night. But old is one of those relative words, not like old relatives, but it has to be compared to something. And so old really become older. Older than the Mets in '69. Older than Viet Nam. Older than the Mets again in '86. And older than Desert Storm. Hope this doesn't make you feel old, and not even older, too.
Brett gave me a sticker years ago, "I REFUSE TO GROW UP!" And I still feel that way. Seems that my age has added years, but somehow avoided maturity. I watch kids playing catch, and I want to, until I remember my rotator cuffs. I watch as my sons are early in their careers, and I think I am too, except my original career is over, and my new one in full time ministry keeps me young. I listen as many young people wonder how they are going to get by, and even though I know how, and why, I still wonder sometimes, how did I make it this far, and what lies ahead? It is the kid in me, always being excited, and still not grown up enough to think I know it all. In fact, the more I learn, the less I find I know. Maybe that is a sign of growing up. I hope not old!
But for me, the line of demarcation in my life was in August of 1975. That is when I became Born Again, and gave my life to Jesus. I can't remember the exact date, but I remember the change in my heart, and its attitude. I remember looking at things differently, and not really knowing why. I remember feeling fresh and new, but didn't know enough about God to even tell anyone. But my heart had changed, and I was excited. An excitement I still enjoy today.
Today I have many friends who study the Bible, prophecy, dates, feasts, festivals, laws, and customs of Jesus. Good for them, because I am not that sophisticated. And I don't want to be. I still enjoy being a child. And to my detractors, I ask they just do what they are commanded to do-love God and then me. Don't ask more of me than God has given. For in my immaturity, I also have this peace, that surpasses their knowledge and understanding. Which can be wrapped up simply in the story of the blind man.
A certain blind man, from birth, was given sight by Jesus. And he went out declaring "I can see, I can see!" And he was known to have been blind from birth, so this was a miracle, to all who saw him. But I like his answer, when asked whether Jesus was good or bad. He simple reply, "all I know is that once I was blind, and now I can see." A simple statement, and that is why I prefer to stay childlike. I just know Jesus. I just trust Jesus. And while I was once blind to Him, now I see Him as the Son of God, who died for my sins. The perfect healer, my savior, and my provider. My best friend. So what kind of question is that, is He good or evil?
My old days proceed Jesus, the good old days in them started the day I let Him into my life. And being able to live in the security that I am already on my eternal road, and soon will enter into heaven with Him. My pain and suffering will be gone, and I will be in the house of the Lord forever.
Is that good or bad? Only if you don't know Jesus would you ask. Let God open the eyes of your heart, and enjoy an infinite amount of good old days that lie ahead. Forever a child of God, coming to Him in a childlike way. I like that.
And still old enough to have my license, to ride, and sit up to take my meals. Yes, these are the good old days.
love with compassion,
Mike

timing lights don't tell time

It is not unusual for motorcycle shops to not work on bikes that are over ten years old. It is not so much that parts aren't available, but usually because techs aren't, or at least ones who are willing to take the time to do it right. So when it comes to a real old timer like my 1978 Suzuki, the techs are few and far between. Up until the advent of electronic ignitions, you had points and condenser to change at every tune up, and throw in a set of plugs. Set the timing, adjust the carbs, and test ride. It may have taken a little time, but you could always tell the difference after the tune up. Today even on my oldest bike, a 2002, you just change the plugs every 12,000 miles-that's it and at twice the mileage interval of before. Adjust the idle, if you ask, and that's it-go riding! For bikes at this point are truly self tuning, the job of a computer, which is constantly making adjustments, over 100 per second, and the plugs are the only part to wear out. And if the computer fails, replace it. Nothing to diagnose, unless you have a check engine light, which will point to a sensor failing, usually not a system, and you have the reason no one can diagnose, and why no one works on bikes over 10 years old. They don't know how!
It's the fundamentals. We watched a show the other night where they pulled out a fuse panel, then had AC repairman come to the house to diagnose. Only two of many found the problem, and one still charged-for diagnosis! The others never looked, and some claim they did, but the tape proved them wrong. The truth being-no one knows how to or take the time for the fundamentals. No one asks, is it plugged in? Does it have gas in it? And we have not only a larcenous repairman, but an ignorant consumer too. Not sure which one came first.
And when Triumph on their new 2011 bikes had to go 12 miles before the computer starts gathering data, one test rider ran out. The bike showed full, but was empty. So it was towed to the shop, where two guys ran full diagnostics, and couldn't fix it. When the service manager was confronted with the fact it was only out of gas, both techs claimed they checked it, and was full. The only thing full was their story, and it was full of, well you get it. They never looked. Magically when fuel was added, it fired right off. But again, no one takes the time to check the basics. So where do you find the time to do it over when you don't have the time to do it right in the first place?
Some so-called Bible teachers are no different. Many are taught, and even quote things supposedly in the Bible, but not found there.
1-Spare the rod and spoil the child. The idea is found, but never the words.
2-God helps them that help themselves. An Aesop fable. If you could save yourself, you wouldn't need God.
3-Money is not the root of all evil-the love of it is. Quote it correctly. There is a difference.
4-The Bible never mentions three wise men, only three gifts. There could have been 100's.
5-The lion may lie down with the lamb, but it is never mentioned. The lion is always paired with another animal.
Now these things may not affect your salvation, but they may affect others. Words mean something, and God's word is very specific in many areas. You must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven. A requirement, not a suggestion. The world is not coming to an end, or why would the Bible refer to birth pangs? And when He says no one knows the time and date of His return, He means NO ONE! Yet billboards all over the city state May 21st is the end. And is precisely a scenario that the Bible warns about. Yet, many, some who are wishing well, yet others who only wish to deceive, make these statements. One thing I do know-God doesn't like to be misquoted! And He is truth, and will work on people with decades of sin, just as well as young ones. His love cannot be explained.
Making plans for May 22nd? For all of us who missed this day of judgment, let's pray for those who were misled. And trust God to change their hearts. For Christianity is not a circus, although these people make it so. Sadly, they are the ones Mr. Barnum warned about, and sadly many minutes can be accounted for in their statements. Stick close to God. He will give the words to you when you need them.
The truth is we will all face a day of judgment. And if you haven't given your life to Jesus based His first visit, you probably won't like His return any better. Today is the day of salvation. Look it up! And be ready.
The old saying about the one who cuts your hair, fixes your motorcycle, and cooks your meal being a keeper. Add to that the one, at the top of the list, the one who can rescue your soul from death and hell. Read your Bible, and maybe you won't misquote it so often. A Godly tune up, needed continually, by a God who knows and loves you.

twisting the habanero throttle of life

When passing through Flagstaff a couple of years ago, Neil and Teri took me to dinner at Salsa Brava. Good food, one of DDD's favorites, and Guido was right on. They even have a salsa bar with their own blends, and one caught my eye-habanero mango. Now I like sweet salsas, so went for the habanero. And it wasn't love at first bite-my mouth instantly caught fire! And after downing two glasses of water, it only got hotter! Seems the habanero chili is one of the hottest on earth, on the heat scale where jalapenos rate 2500, the habanero rate 100-300,000! And this was news to this gringo! But strangely, after returning there on two subsequent trips, I ate the same salsa, and it wasn't as hot. The difference is/was, I was ready for it, knowing what it was. Either that or my sense of hot was completely scorched from the first visit. Still looking for that elusive mango taste.
But I also found out that the salsa was great for clearing the sinuses, no prescription needed. Just lots of water, and ready access to the men's room. Now where do they keep the extra toilet paper?
Riding motorcycles can be like that, as just because it says one thing on the tank, doesn't mean that it isn't fast, or slow. For a guy who doesn't ride Harleys, I rode two of the same model within four days. When I rode Pastor Fred's 2010 Dyna Fat Bob, which he had told me was breathed on, it was fast, and I was ready. Even talking to Spud this weekend, he told me that the Fat Bob would pull right to red line-aren't they all supposed to? So when Chris came by with his brand new 2011 Dyna Fat Bob, and told me to see what it would do, I did. And was disappointed after riding Fred's. Whereas his bike accelerated to 90 mph easily, the new bike was much slower, and I finally got it to top out at 105. And compared to the new Tiger XC 800 I am putting miles on, both are slow. So what does it all mean?
Like life, we are not all in the same state of tune. To some it matters, wanting to get the most out of life, but to others, they just cruise by. Never opening the throttle to see what life has for them. I am not a cruiser, I want the most performance out life I can get-and also my rides. A habanero ride. After being ready, of course. And on the 2011 Fat Bob, I would have been OK-if, I hadn't ridden one that showed its potential. And once again the old question about speed is answered once more, "how fast do you want to go?" "How much do you want to spend?"
God asks you the same question. How close to Him do you want to be? Or other words, how blessed do you want to be? I say, spend it all! For even though we all claim to serve the same God, we are all at different levels. Some walk with God WTO, while others barely open the throttle of blessings. Some acknowledge Him publicly in all they do, and some barely recognize Him at all. And the fruit, or blessings we bear will tell that difference. Jesus tells us that "these things shall follow those that believe." These things being healings, miracles, salvation, peace, and a walk with God that surpasses anything dreamed of or imagined. And although we are all equal, some just don't ever open the throttle enough to find out, and miss the blessings that God wants to give.
And you don't have to be foolish like me with habaneros. Or spend money to go fast, for built into each of us is a potential that only God can unlock. Just twist your faith throttle. And unless we let Him, we cannot do it ourselves. Trust God, and avoid a habanero experience that may have you avoid all salsas in the future. Trust God when you open the throttle, and get everything out of the ride that the bike can give. But ask God today, "what is your desire for my day?" Jesus told us in the Lord's prayer, to ask "thy will be done." Let us be bold enough to trust God. And though I ride fast through the valley of habaneros, I will fear no evil-for He is with me!
But it takes trust. I trusted the salsa and got burnt. Trust God and don't get burnt. Now that you have tasted of God, don't you want more? Follow Him, and these things shall follow you. Get the most out of each meal, each ride, and your life. And if you don't know how hot a chili is, ask! If you want more of God, just ask. And let the blessings begin!

ooh baby it's a wild world, it's hard to get by with just a smile...

Freedom of choice. We all scream about it when we don't get our way. "It's our right!" we scream, "it's my right!" And sometimes believe just because we are Americans, and have that freedom, that it is universal. Sorry, another myth exposed. For only in God are you truly free, and only in Christ do you have the freedom to choose, and find real freedom. But your choice will not necessarily set you free.
Yusef Islam sold over 25 million records in the late sixties and into the seventies. A super star of his time. He not only sang, but played guitar and was a great songwriter. But somewhere along the way, he got involved in Islamic beliefs, and became a Moslem in the late seventies. At that point he put down his guitar, and refused to ever sing again, believing that by not using the gifts that God has given him he was glorifying Allah. And for 30 years never sang, and never played guitar. Trying to please a false God, who among his 99 characteristics does not include love. But does include harsh rules, and no promise of heaven when you die. You live your whole life hoping, but never knowing. And you never experience peace. Something, peace, still such a chanting point of liberals who tell us "to do your own thing," except when it comes to Jesus. But after 30 years, he picked up his guitar and now sings again. His voice, as beautiful as ever, but 30 years of joy robbed from him by a false God who inflicts personal pain and suffering to his believers. Where is the freedom in that? 25 million albums, and you still don't remember him?
Sorry, I forgot to tell you his real name. Cat Stevens. Now does it ring a bell? Songs that were so beautiful, and continued to be played and sung for 30 years, despite his self inflicted wounds of denial. With no rewards for his action-it didn't get him closer to God one inch. And watching a documentary on him, which I turned off after a short while, Moslem clerics, and so called experts mostly agreed what he did what not found in the Koran, and only some fringe sects would demand it. Personally, they were glad to hear his music again. And I am too.
Religion, the base word of it, means binding. Like to tie you up and restrict you. Sound familiar? And I don't listen to anyone, any group, or any so-called experts debate Christianity either. Jesus was against religion, for He was the true author of freedom. He promised to set you free, if you followed Him and walked by the spirit. Truth, He calls it. But today too many churches, denominations, or cults demand your allegiance, and invade the freedom of the Holy Spirit. Joining their membership, putting fiscal demands on their congregation, and demanding works to prove their devotion to God. All things not found in the Bible, but taught from pulpits. And sadly followed by people who never get the full benefit of knowing Jesus Christ.
You don't have to be a cult member to deny Jesus, just not follow Him. And those that debate Him only lose, because once you engage in an argument, you both lost. For it is not knowledge, family genealogy, denominational doctrines, or self denial that sets you free-each one of those will have its own kind of binding influence-religion is the name we call it. And will only rob you of joy, and get between you and God. A true God demands a choice, but does not force Himself on you. A loving God is there for you, and sacrificed His son so you can be reunited with Him. For even in our most altruistic moments, we will always fall short. Sadly, so many religions only tell you to listen, only in Christ do you have someone who will listen to you. He is the Way!
In Cat's beautiful song, Father and Son, listen to it on YouTube, and listen to the words. A pre-Harry Chapin, and gentler Cat's Cradle. Sometime in your life, God will make Himself known to you, and you must give an answer to who Jesus Christ is. His song states, "it hard, but it's harder to ignore it." Don't ignore the calling on your heart today to accept Jesus. Don't let God become the same old story and turn away.
For there is a way, His name is Jesus. Don't throw away your life for nothing like Yusef Islam did. Enjoy all the freedom God desires for you, more than you can imagine or ask for yourself. For there is a way-and those who choose Jesus will never regret. Don't be the son who turns away, but be the one who turns to the Son.
And pray for Yusef and those others like him looking for love in all the wrong places. Freedom to choose also allows a wrong decision. Don't throw away your life over trying to please a false God. Choose God and live. True freedom, only found in Jesus.
Yusef, I hope you get the message. It's a wild world, and hard to get by with just a smile.

spending the day with friends

I get rude comments from certain people when I tell Harley jokes. But never when I tell Triumph jokes, or even Honda jokes. And they don't hurt my feelings when I hear them about my own bike, if it's funny, it's funny! And I have been accused of being jealous of Harley owners, and only being able to afford riding Triumphs. For their knowledge, I am down to four of them. No, not so I always have one that runs. And if you really cared, why not buy we one? I have been accused of not living the lifestyle-hey buddy, I ride mine. when you have ridden 50,000 miles a year for the past four years, tell me about your trailer queen and where it's been. 20 grand and 20 miles still don't make you a biker. OK you win, your FICA score is higher. Get out and ride!
You see I have the same addiction that my friend Spud at Biggs HD has, we both love motorcycles. And I have a standing invite anytime I want, to ride any bike they have on the floor! And I haven't because I feel bad for not going in to buy one. I am not afraid to ride one, another myth exposed, and for some strange reason, these Harley people like us. Maybe they are the ones you should vilify! When we walk in, we are joked about as "Oh no, the Triumph people are here-shut the doors-keep them away from our real bikes." And we all laugh! And when I take Stu on his Wing, he gets it too! Although we all know Gold Wing riders deserve it. For we all love to ride. Hey-we are even the token Triumph owners in Black Sheep-Harley Davidsons for Christ! Don't tell Marty! And are blessed to minister with them, and we love to. You see true love covers a multitude of sins. Even brand prejudice. And yesterday, on an incredible day of blessings from God, He brought a Harley into my life-no I haven't spent any money I don't have, my Triumph signs are still intact, although I can still fit two more bikes in the garage. I rode Pastor Z.'s 2010 Dyna Street Bob. He made me get my helmet, and told me, "this runs like a Harley is supposed to." Not sure what that was to mean, but I got on it, and got on it! And he was right. With just a pipe and air cleaner, and the right download, this thing ran-fast. Not just for a Harley-but for a motorcycle. It had apes-which aren't me, and at 90mph on a side street, they made me feel uncomfortable. And when I got back, nothing had fallen off, it stopped when I put on the brakes, although I had to use the kill button to turn it off-couldn't find the key, dumb rookie. Must have been the Triumph racing jacket I was wearing. So take note, I think sooner than later, Spud may have a new demo rider.
So, before you think I've lost it, or have finally gone over to the other side, I haven't. Your Harley pride of the bar and shield are safe from my throttle twisting hands. You will continue to hear my bad jokes, and I will still tolerate yours.
So there. I even noticed the sun came up in the east again today, so your world is safe! And to prove it, on the traveling Viet Nam wall, Harley riders loved my Bonneville. And we talked riding, and how fast it is, and those who saw me ride Fred's bike were a bit enamored-how fast was it really one guy asked? His friend answered for me before I could-too fast for you! And we all laughed. When one Harley rider asked to borrow an adjustable wrench, I asked standard or metric? For a second he paused, and then laughed with us when he got it. the wrenches adjustable stupid! If I have hurt any wrenchophiles, I apologize. If you know me, in these hands no tools are safe with me. And I felt safe leaving my keys in my bike. No one from that group was going to steal my fast Bonneville! Or was it they didn't want oil to leak on their pretty leathers? Or couldn't find the key?
While doing hospital visitations last night, we took Gavin with us. On March 18th, they told his wife he had 5% chance of living, and would be a vegetable if he did. As we went to visit Conrad, another brain accident victim, with Gavin, the nurses were ecstatic over his healing! Miracle! Tears, hugs, and encouragement to them-from Gavin. And when he went in to see Conrad, reached out his hand with Theresa and prayed. And in the middle of this group, told via hand motions how much he loved his wife, Lynsay. Her tears said it all.
But while waiting for the elevator, we encountered two women in the waiting area. Talking to them, we got to pray for her husband Richard, and when I went in to pray for him, Gavin wanted to go with me. And put his hand out when we did, just like he gripped one lady's arm in the hallway when we prayed there! Voluntarily-because he wanted to!
You never know when God is going to bless you. In hallways, rooms, or even on the street. Step out of your church world today, and step into God's world. Meet some other people that Jesus died for. Ride a Harley-no egos were damaged during the test ride. Offer to pray when you encounter someone hurting in your path. Be patient and let God heal, He just invites me along for the ride. So I go. And take the ride of your life in Jesus.
Oh by the way, Gavin rides a Triumph. Just couldn't let that pass. I guess you really are what you ride!

following directions-part 1

There are only three things you need to know about electronics. Next year they will be faster, smaller, do more, and cost less. Sorry, four. And this knowledge has been invaluable to me over the years. Take microwaves, for instance.
My GS750 had a flat tire, and I needed a way to get it to the shop. I called Jack Baillio, who I went to church with and talked him into letting me use one of his delivery trucks. He was one of the seven Baillio brothers, all whose first name started with J-Johnny, Jack, Jimmie, Jeffery, etc... who owned Baillio's, the largest electronics store in New Mexico. He finally relented, and told me to go see Jimmie, and when the first truck came in, I could borrow it. I went down, and waiting with Jimmie for a truck, he offered me some hot chocolate. Faster than I could pick up a remote to change channels, he handed me a Styrofoam cup with steaming hot water. I was amazed at how fast this microwave had not only heated the water, but not melted the cup. Some day, I'm going to have one. But right now, it didn't fit my budget or riding style. Besides, my roommate Bob and I had all the appliances we could handle. The toaster oven that didn't, and a pot for boiling hot dogs, a pan for grilling them, and a refrigerator. For keeping the mustard, ketchup, and relish cold, along with the milk for the cereal. We ate a lot Lucky Charms, Trix, and Rice Krispies in those pre-Golden Graham days. And all these items were squeezed in due to the fact the top shelf had been lowered to accommodate two framed, 8x10 glossies of my high school sweetheart. Which mysteriously disappeared when I met Theresa. A mystery, unsolved to this very day.
But after marrying her, and moving to Durango, I figured to help her cooking progress along, she wasn't quite the All Conference Cooking Champ yet, I would buy her a microwave. With the closest Baillio's one state and 250 miles away, I went to Montgomery Wards, and bought a floor model on my store card. Reduced to only $659, I had bought motorcycles for less, and this was almost the amount of our rent for the next five months. It was big, portable only in the fact that two men could place it where you wanted it, and her cooking skills improved quickly. After the micro waved fried chicken incident, which is another story for another time. And I was impressed how this beach level, California girl could learn to cook so fast. Even more impressed because we lived at 6500', and where water boiled at 212 for you flatlanders, it boiled at 177 for us, which took things longer to cook. I was even more impressed when I found out she had read and followed the directions on the boxes for high altitude cooking.
To put this vintage microwave in perspective, when we moved to our cabin, we had nowhere to put it, at least not close enough to a plug. So we sat it on the counter between the kitchen and the dining room. The darkened glass front facing the kitchen, with the trendy, dark walnut appliqué covering the sides, and the bare back facing the dining room. To add some style to the back, I put a Castrol sticker on the back, just like the ones we all had on our vans and tool boxes, and like the one my friend Joe, a tuner for Cal Rayborn, had on his wooden leg. It definitely did more for his leg-trust me. Some things do go out of style. But Theresa's cooking got better, to great, and we all learned that reading directions was good, but following them was better.
I was a part time student going full time at UNM before I got married, and took a course called history of Christianity, in which I was not the only one misled. It was really the history of religion, and taught by two men. The first, an Irish Catholic, so conservative even his skin was gray to match his clothing and salt and pepper hair, who talked so fast we thought he was on speed, and never answered questions. His co-professor was the perfect compliment. A Mormon, who with his long beard looked like a 100 year old Brigham Young, or a comatose Santa. And didn't talk, and never answered questions. For the final exam, I was ready. And the exam was, Describe in detail the three most important events in Christianity. For almost three blue books, my 18 month old Christian brain exploded, telling of the immaculate conception and birth, the death, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. An A paper if there ever was one. But unfortunately that was not what they had taught, they wanted things like the birth of Mormonism, Constantine's divine revelation, and the Martin Luther story. And so I got a D! And the rest of us who were Christians did too, except for Florabelle's Pastor Sam, who did well. He gave them what they wanted, and although we questioned his doctrines-his denomination denied the deity of Jesus, he got an A because he had listened and followed directions.
Just like Nicodemus did with Jesus. when Jesus told him he must be born again, he questioned it. And then this powerful, both rich and religiously man, risked it all when he gave his life to Jesus, and became Born Again. He not only heard the directions, he followed them.
Are you a follower of Jesus? Or do you just go along with a denomination, or a family tradition? It is not enough to read and know what to do, but to do it. There is a difference in reading the instructions, and following them. From microwaves, to final exams, follow the directions. Your final exam will some day be, who do you say Jesus is? Only as a follower will you know for sure.

wip wop-work in process, wating on parts

A good parts man is tough to beat. But a great one is hard to find. Notice I didn't say manager-they usually are more administrative in today's world, or counterman-they can be someone who knows his way around a computer, as has been my experience recently. No, a parts man. The guy who stays up on all the TSO's, reads the updates, and probably knows more about the repair of an item than the tech. He is the man who knows that you need new gaskets, o-rings, and bolts when replacing an updated water pump, and knows both the old and new numbers. He knows, and has been in contact with the factory, to correct them on a misprint or the latest mistake online, it used to be a microfiche, or before that the parts book. In my time I have known two such men, and both were so good that no one else was even close, including sometimes the parts book!
Earl Zook worked for Ford in the fifties, and into the seventies. The Ford store I worked at parts department ran around him. And it needed to, as Earl was the source for parts. The last and only dealer to not be on computer, they had Earl. And he could tell you not only the right part, but where it was, who to call to find it, and at the mention of his name, they shipped it. He was that good, but when he retired, Ford rushed in the next day with computers, and things got slower, and less personable without Earl. One of a kind, he knew his business.
My friend Richard is also the same type, except he worked for Mercedes Benz. He told me once that when he entered the business, he wanted to be the best, and he was. He studied, and more than once had been passed over for management because who would replace him? But I knew him as a parts manager also, and the world needs more Richards. I also worked at dealers without him, and he was also getting called, because no one knew Mercedes Benz like Richard. A tribute to my friend, the best there was.
But both these men had a similar driving instinct, but also didn't suffer idiots very well. Both were more than willing to help, I saw it many times, but expected you to learn. Not to keep up, but at least to remember. And when you didn't get it after two or three times, you were demoted when you called. You had become a time waster, and no longer welcome. They were happy to promote new Earls or Richards, teaching them the ways, and also the parts, but if you were just another flunkie too lazy to look it up, they knew it, and your calls weren't answered quickly-if at all. And interestingly, neither man thought they were unusual-just doing their jobs as they should be done. All others, I wish you would take note. Even to the point of when no one could find the part that the cards said was in stock, they would go to the shelf to show them where it was. How many parts departments would do that today?
It was more familiarization than memorization. Remember the difference. Some have knowledge, these guys had wisdom. And I think the difference shows. I know many men who know the Bible better than me. They have memory verses, have studied deeply, and even read many outside commentators on certain subjects. Talking with them is like a Bible talking to you. Yet there is something missing. Many know the Bible, but don't have the intimacy of knowing the person who wrote it. Knowledge not for application, but for knowing. I usually last as long as two classes under these types, as they have knowledge, but it is so impersonal they don't know how to apply it. Unlike my parts men example, who knew the applications intimately, these guys are little more than an education experiment on memory. And I want more from the Bible than that, and a lot more from God!
So I am leery when I am introduced to a Bible teacher. I rather see the evidence of his ministry application, than his degrees or recall. Why? It's not personal, and God is. Jesus calls us friends, not subjects. Not numbers. We have to get to know Him, not the other way around. And I want to be close to God, closer to the action. But it takes a commitment, a commitment of love. And the evidence is not found in diplomas, degrees, or titles. It is found in testimony. For Jesus tells us that without love, our words are just like a tinkling bell-noisy. No wonder some people duck when they see us coming. Or change the subject, or sadly avoid Christians all together. For they get it better than we do-we care more about us than them. And it shows.
That is why im Matthew 25 Jesus rebuked the church types. They had rebuked demons, and even prophesied in His name. But it wasn't personal, they didn't know Him. He was more impressed by those who showed His love by feeding the hungry, giving water to the thirsty, clothing the naked, visiting those in jail and sick, and welcoming strangers. He did all these things in love to us-and wants us to do it to others-IN HIS NAME. Not just a trendy salutation, but real words. So do it!
Ask the spirit to guide you when you read. Whether it is a verse, a chapter, or a book-pray before reading. And watch as you are given insight by the one who wrote the scriptures. Who knows what you need, where to find it, where it goes, and where to find it on the shelf. He is always available, and always in stock.
And just like a valued parts man, willing to show you how to find the answers you, or in their case parts you need. Reading more and getting less? Ask Jesus-before you read. Reading less, and getting more-thank the spirit. And think on the things that God shows you during the day.
A good parts man not only knows what a veeblefetzer is, but where it goes. A loving God knows who you are, what you need, and where you are going. Make it more personal, and watch your world change. And your relationship with God grow to a depth beyond recall. Be more than a part on the shelf-be the right part, in the right situation. Only in the spirit will you become what God desires for you.

Mike

freedom from religion-only found in Jesus

Jack Nicholson explains freedom best to Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider. He explains in a few sentences that the red necked/short sided bigots aren't afraid of him, but what he represents. Dennis is too stoned to get it, and sadly the message has been lost on many over the years. Whereas many look at freedom as in a freedom from, you can also look at it as a freedom to. A freedom to be yourself, to express yourself, and a freedom to become all you can-or all you don't want to be. And like the sticker says, "Some have therapy, the rest of us have motorcycles."
But for some reason we fear freedom. For with it it brings a note of responsibility, and a note of respect with it. And what if you are freer than me? Meekness, the Bible calls it, is being in a position to do the right thing, but doing something better. Forgive, where you don't need too. Give when it is not expected. Acknowledge when it is easier than to ignore, and being obedient to God when the choice is up to you.
"Where the spirit of the Lord is there is liberty," scripture tells us. Not programs or policies, but walking in the spirit. Not the church, not the word, not legalism. No denominational barriers. Jesus. A few years back, Jamie Buckingham, then editor of Charisma magazine was healed of cancer by God. Confirmed by doctors, he was on a Christian program, who interviewed him, wanting to know what special prayer, what preacher, what service, or what church had healed him. His answer each time, was "all I know is Jesus." But yet, the interviewer became weary, and then suspicious, what no plan of attack? You mean you just prayed, and God healed you? YES!! Sad, but the unbeliever will take this man at his word, while the "church" type man looks for physical evidence. Surely God couldn't do this by Himself? Surely-he's wrong. Just Jesus? And I watched recently as a man asked about my ministry. He didn't get it that God meets my needs. He gave all the things he did priority in his effort to please God. But failed, if only he had asked God what God wanted. And he almost seemed jealous because in my simple obedience, God had blessed me more-at least according to him. To him, Christianity was "Jesus and..." you can add your own words. When Mr. Buckingham had it right the whole time, "all he knew was Jesus."
And just like Jack explained to Dennis, the world is afraid and hates something it cannot control. And religion is afraid of something it cannot control. Many say they profess Christ, but feel they have to add to it. Jesus and works. Jesus and penance. Jesus and 40 Days of Purpose. Jesus and something-but not Jesus by Himself. They need something to hang onto, when the Word plainly tells us we walk by faith, not by sight. Faith being trusting God, when sometimes there is no evidence of Him. Where your spirit bears witness to His. Personal, intimate, and done through an obedience of love.
Maybe that is why I love being on the road so much. When you are traveling, you are what you are right then and there. Just you, the bike, and the road. Meeting other bikers, it doesn't matter if you are a doctor, or being treated by one. Whether you have 83 months to go on your latest bike contract, or if you paid cash. Or what brand of bike you choose. No yesterdays are remembered by those you just encountered, just like no sin is remembered by a forgiving God. The common denominator, but not the equalizer is the road. Not equal, because although the road and opportunities may be, it is what we do with them, and where we let it take us, that makes us unequal. Just like God. Some choose to walk with Him, some just walk. Some live by rules, while we have morals. God looks at us in a perpetual right now, forever. We carry baggage, and sometimes insist upon unloading it on others. Freedom is not unloading your burden on others, but giving it to God. Who will deal with it for you. And give you a freedom that only He can give.
And to those who question your walk with Christ, you will appear careless. How can anybody not worry? Surely Jesus, or at least the church needs people like us to help? But the truth is, what appears careless, is really carefree. Burden free, having given it all over to God. No tethers attached, not bungeed to the bike where you can't see it. And not dumped off on someone subordinate.
That is the freedom Jack was talking of, he just didn't realize it was only found in Christ. And even when they tried to kill that freedom, by nailing it to a cross, it resurrected itself-as only God can do! But some still try to kill the spirit in us today. For they wish to think they know better than a loving God.
Trust God! If you want to freak out your pastor, tell him you trust God. When the bills are overdue, the doctor tells you the "C" word, when your spouse tells you she isn't in love with you anymore, trust God. But trust Him before the calamities occur. For life, like your ride, is a series of right nows put together to form your life. Right now, be right with God. And find the roads better, the food tastier, the fellowship better, and your spirit freer as you follow God.
Your life will say more about who God is in it than any words. Freedom in Christ, and from religion. Traveling through life enjoying any road you are on. That's freedom, a liberty only found in Christ. Be free today-and enjoy the ride of your life!

the third man

It starts when you're a kid and hurt yourself. After twenty minutes of tears and looking for a mark your mother can't find, she tells you, "we'll put a band aid on it and you'll be fine." And you are, not questioning the healing power of the adhesive strip. Until it comes time to remove it, along with all the hair on your arm, causing more pain than the original boo-boo. And whether you know it or not, your whole life will be dictated by fixing things with a band aid.
When your first car is measured not in miles per gallon, but miles per quart of oil burned, we used to use the remedies found in the back of car magazines. My favorite, a man in a service station uniform, complete with hat and bow tie-sure made him look official, telling us by adding this special oil treatment, our worn out engine would run like new, and stop burning oil. We called him Mr. SBO-Stop Burning Oil. And the Granatelli's made a fortune of STP, and still do. And for awhile the blue clouds of smoke would subside, until the car stopped in the middle of nowhere, with friends you weren't allowed to hang out with, and well, you were already late, I think you get it. The band aid failed.
I see many on feeding tubes in hospitals when they are unable to eat food. This provides nourishment, but if asked, and able to answer, the number one thing they wish to eat is a Double Double from In-and -Out. Information per the nutrition therapy nurse. Why don't they use that in their advertising? Isn't that what a hamburger's all about? This tube feeding is like an internal band aid, and works, but nothing like a burger and fries to help mentally-not sure about the physical ramifications, but refer to the initial band aid your mom put on you, and hey-it works!
And sadly, many of us live our life on the life support of band aids. Hide the wound, I'll worry about the scar later. Struggling with the things of God? I know, I'll read through the Bible in a year. That will make me closer to God. But what after you miss a day or two, and fall behind? It only adds more pressure-nope, that ain't it. I'll go to church more often, that's it. Until something else more important, like a Padre game, or a ride comes along, at least God will forgive me. I know, I'll get up early and pray more. Start the day after tomorrow, I have a big night tonight. And finally, I'll only listen to KWVE in the car. Except tomorrow night, they have a Led Zeppelin marathon on. And so the list of band aid remedies goes on, and so does our problem.
The Bible tells us the Trinity is Father, Son, aka Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. NOT Father, Son, and more Bible time-not more prayer time, not more church , and not more KWVE. These things aren't wrong-but they are not the Trinity. For the third person of the Trinity is a person-the Holy Spirit. Who urged you to trust Jesus when unsaved, which comforts you when troubled, who leads you when you need guidance, and who in all things points you to Jesus, who always points you to His Father-Almighty God! God doesn't put a band aid on our problems to cover up the symptoms, He deals with the cause. And when you let the Spirit guide you, He will heal the problem. I tend to cut myself a lot, and put band aids on the cuts-"it's ok honey, yes, that's the bone, but it'll heal-just get me a band aid." My personal favorite-extra large and extra absorbent. And then when it gets red and infected, I go to the doctor. History if nothing else should remind me, go to doctor first, but when a band is available, well, the doc can wait.
God is patient-aren't you glad? But why go through a band aid temporary fix when we can call on the Spirit to guide us? To comfort us? To bring us to salvation? Didn't you know that you may hide the wound, but it will still leave a scar?
Trust God today. Walk in the spirit. He will encourage you to read your Bible, and get more out of it. You will want to listen to KWVE, and fellowship with others like you at church. And give you a comfort and a peace that only Jesus can offer, way beyond trying to understand why your car is still burning oil, or your finger is infected.
Which just may free you up to do more of the things you like to do. Like ride motorcycles. Or have that Double Double. Yes, the Holy Spirit likes to ride and eat too. So trust Him today.
Just think, all the blessings you missed because your mom put a band aid on it, instead of praying over it? When all you had to do was ask.

unveiling events-July, 2010

Really I was just following orders. The bike that Triumph had given me to ride, a new 2011 Sprint GT, had not been released to dealers yet. They had only seen pictures of it, and Triumph riders had only been leaked details via spy shots on the Internet. And I had been told, "take it to Jesse, so he can load it onto the demo truck. Pick up a Street Triple R and then swap it for another GT." Even I could do that, I mean who wouldn't want to ride three brand new 2011 models in one day, after putting 1500 miles on the first GT?
So I pulled into NCY where about 100+ Triumph riders were getting ready for their turn on riding the demos. I had never met Jesse, but figured he would be easy to find. What I didn't expect was the reception. I pulled in on the blue GT, and parked by the trailer. And soon I was surrounded by the riders in wait, who recognized the new model, and wanted a first hand look. Some even asked to sit on it, but thankfully I declined their request. With about 30 riders surrounding me, and asking questions, I was a bit overwhelmed, but felt very cool having this unique bike-and I was riding it! But soon Jesse popped out of the crowd, and told me he needed to get the bike out of there. I helped him make his way through the crowd, and wheel it into the back of the building-away from everyone. He then explained that no one had seen the bike yet, and that other dealers had complained "why didn't they get to see it first?" So no one gets to see new bikes until they all do-together! And I had just broken that rule, unknowingly, and it was kinda fun to watch and also be part of.
It seems a while ago, certain dealers didn't like the fact that Triumph was using a dealer in So Cal to prep the Press Fleet. So Triumph sent them out to a private, non-Triumph shop, and well-let's just say that the love wasn't there that Mickey gives them now. Politics aside, he does a great job with the bikes, and also with the magazine editors. And it reflects in the road test reviews. Just read any recent articles-the press, and in turn riders love the new Triumphs!
Fortunately no one, including me got into trouble. I was just following orders, and now I ask before taking any bikes to the demo trucks. And in fact, the local dealers in So Cal have gotten to know me, as I stop by and let them look at the new models before they have them. At the dame dealer a few years ago, I had a new Tiger, which was not being released for a few months. I stopped in and asked the sales manger if he had any info on it. He told me the bike was too new, and he hadn't seen one. When I asked, "would you like to see one?" his eyes lit up, and soon the whole store was out looking. They had gotten a private show, a pre-release show, and felt honored. They still refer me to the guy who brought the Tiger by that day.
We all like a glimpse of new models, or of what's going to happen in the future. People pay millions for fortune tellers, and horoscope readings. Only to be disappointed when they events don't happen. And whine about the money it cost them. Jesus tells us about the future, and based on his past, we should all listen. The Bible is only 100% accurate when it comes to prophecy, so why don't we seek Him first like we are told? When He foretells of coming world events, like the increase in floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, and other so-called natural disasters, why don't we listen? And yet as the experts mumble some nonsense far from the truth, we listen to them. I just don't get it. Why aren't we excited like the men who saw the new GT, and recognized it even though they had never seen one before? Why can't we be more like the sales manager who jumped at the chance to see what he had only heard about?
FAITH. Believing the evidence of things not seen. Or trusting God when their is no evidence of Him. But when there is, we still don't? Why? I can get theological, but the answer is we don't listen. The signs are there, the messages, some are over 3000 years old. We had over 300 prophecies fulfilled by Jesus alone, wouldn't that be like road testing a new bike for a million miles?
Again, it takes faith, to please God. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We trust God because He is trustworthy. And everything He says will happen, in His timing. So be patient, for His next step is calling out His church from the earth-the rapture. And since He wants you to be rescued, He wants you saved, and is patient waiting for you to say yes to Him! He takes no joy in the death of anyone-even the sinner! Now that's love.
Jesus may be as new to you as a new model to old riders. But it takes trust, and you cannot trust someone you don't know. The rapture predicted is real. It will happen. The question is will you accept Him now while there is still time? What if what He says is true?
Now it's easy. Don't wait and find out the hard way. New models may come and go, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Forever is along time-make sure you spend it with Him, in Heaven.

Mike
